Headway West London provide resources for brain injury survivors along with their families, caregivers, and relevant professionals in the West London area. Headway West London recognises the value of volunteer participation in helping achieve its strategic aims and extend the delivery of services offered.

Details of the Volunteering Opportunity:

At Headway West London, the volunteer would be involved in facilitating events that we offer including:

  • Monthly Support Group
  • Social Events (E.g. Visits to Kew Gardens)
  • REACTIVATE
  • Art Workshop
  • Sports Sessions

Volunteers can choose to attend any one or all volunteering opportunities.

We do ask that you commit fully, for a minimum of 4-6 sessions, to whichever you choose.

Volunteers will be provided information, support, and development opportunities. Volunteers are reasonably expected to participate in volunteer reviews and training where appropriate for their role.

The volunteer gains knowledge and experience working with brain injury survivors. They will learn about how HWL offers support to members on their journey post-injury. If the minimum commitment is met, volunteers can request a certificate for their own records of experience.

Role Specific Definitions:

Support Group: It runs every month on the 3rd Monday at St Paul's Centre, Queen Caroline St, London, W6 9PJ and is held from 2 PM- 3:30 PM. Our daytime support group offers friendly and informal meetups, providing peer-to-peer support for people impact by brain injury. The volunteer would help prepare the venue and welcome members. Volunteers are expected to chat with members, offer support, and ensure all discussions are respectful and appropriate. This may be face to face or virtually. It is expected that you commit to 6 sessions.

Social Events, i.e., trips: The volunteer would be expected to facilitate and supervise. This includes ensuring all members are always with the group and monitoring any interactions with the public. Some past trips have included visits to Kew Garden, Fulham Palace, and a quiz night! These events are planned, and you will be given notice about them, but they are not a regular date/time.

REACTIVATE: Our health and well being programme that runs every few months. Here, volunteers would have a supporting role for the link worker. This can include guiding members or professionals in/around the venue, setting up for each session and facilitating group discussions. It is expected that you commit to one cohort round which runs every week for 6-weeks.

Art Workshop: It runs monthly on the last Thursday in Shepherd’s Bush from 2:15 PM- 3:45 PM. Volunteers are expected to guide members to the venue and ensure the smooth running of the workshop by supporting members with any equipment and engage in discussions. It is expected that you commit to 6 sessions.

Sense Active: Our weekly sports session will be with Sense Active, and we plan start groups soon.

Social Media: This is a remote volunteering opportunity. Volunteers will require to help make social media posts on our social accounts. These posts can be about events/activities that happened or facts/tips to help management post-injury. It is expected that you commit for 6 weeks.
