Doorstep Charity - Online Reading Volunteer

Details of the Charity:

Doorstep Library is a charity dedicated to helping introduce young children (aged 0-11 years), living in disadvantaged areas of London, to the pleasure and benefits of reading. The organisation offers in-person or online home-based service that finds the most appropriate books for every child encouraging their imaginations and natural love for stories.

Details of the Volunteering Opportunity:

In this role, you will support the charity through online weekly meetings to share with the children and their families your love for reading. As an Online Reading Volunteer, you will learn a set of skills such as remote collaboration, time management, adaptability, communication, problem-solving, organisation and documentation, and virtual event management.

Typical duties include:

  • Engaging in a one-on-one session with individual students to provide personalised attention and support
  • Reading aloud to children to model fluent reading and expressiveness, helping them develop comprehension and listening skills
  • Recommending age-appropriate books that match children’s reading levels and interests
  • Helping the families to connect with the community and signposting to additional sources of local support

Please note, the Brunel Volunteers team would like you to commit to a minimum of 2-3 months.
