Harlington Hospice - Inpatient Unit Volunteer

Harlington Hospice was set up by concerned residents and has grown because we have huge community involvement. We thank all those who have supported us and hope that you and others will continue to join us on our developing journey.

Details of the Volunteering Opportunity:

As an In-Patient Student Volunteer, you will be contributing to the day-to-day running of the Hospice.

The roles that you will be doing as a volunteer:

  • Welcoming visitors, finding chairs for them, directing them around the unit
  • Distributing menus and assisting patients to make their meal choices
  • Serving meals, snacks and drinks to patients
  • Filling up water jugs, offering drinks to visitors
  • Collecting crockery and cutlery after meals, rinsing them and keeping the kitchenette and cafe areas tidy
  • Keep our patients’ company; chatting to them, reading to them or assisting them in recreational activities if appropriate.
  • Using your particular skills e.g. bring a musical instrument to entertain patients if there is time

Training and Support

  • Induction- Shadow a volunteer or health care assistant for one shift
  • Debrief at the end of the shift if required
  • Regular Hospice newsletter
  • Online mandatory training of agreed modules which must be completed prior to starting
  • Standard DBS Certificate

Minimum of three hours per shift a week:

  • After school: 4 PM - 7 PM
  • Weekends: 11 AM - 2 PM

Skills Required:

  • Trustworthy and reliable.
  • Excellent Communication Skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, to deal with a diverse range of people.
  • Good organisational skills.
  • A flexible and non-judgemental approach to people and work.
  • Enjoy working as part of a team.
