This responsibility involves i) acknowledging and challenging discrimination, inequality and inequity and the practices that sustain it and ii) acting to highlight, disrupt and address systemic issues of racism, inequality and precarity. GL is fully committed to making effective changes in our spheres of influence, both as a research centre and as individuals, to remove barriers and promote access, opportunity, and justice, especially for marginalised and excluded individuals, groups and communities.

diverse, inclusive research community is central to GL, and its achievement and maintenance serves as a fundamental marker of our success. The centre will value diverse and unique identities by instilling, nurturing and safeguarding an accessible, welcoming and respectful environment for all researchers at all stages of their academic careers, acknowledging different lived experiences, cultural norms and expectations, life and career stage commitments. We endorse and will aim to embed the principles of the Researcher Development Concordat, the Athena Swan Charter, Brunel’s new EDI Strategy, Social Justice for all 2021-24 and other relevant directives in our practices, ensuring transparency and accountability. Centre practices will be reviewed, evaluated and enhanced through regular engagements with Brunel and sector-wide EDI expertise and related networks.

To be effective, Global Lives aims to support research activities in all the world’s regions. Therefore, GL recognises the crucial importance of local and indigenous knowledge systems, values, cultures, insights and context in the locations in which we work. This approach to research activities requires cognitive and knowledge-system equity as well as deliberate internal capacity development to ensure that equitable collaboration, co-design and co-production practices are central to our activities. Through diverse research opportunities and mechanisms, we will be i) innovative in our understanding and practices and ii) critically aware of the impact/influence of our research power, processes, methodologies and outputs on societies.

To be effective, Global Lives aims to support research activities in all the world’s regions. Therefore, GL recognises the crucial importance of local and indigenous knowledge systems, values, cultures, insights and context in the locations in which we work.
