'Is That Funny?': Comedy and Politics / Politics and Comedy

We are delighted to announce that the next Centre for Comedy Studies Research and Magna Carta Institute Comedy, Politics and Populism event takes place in February 2018 during the Leicester Comedy Festival:

'Is That Funny?': Comedy and Politics / Politics and Comedy
Sunday 18th February 2018, 2.30pm-4.00pm
The Cosy Club, 68 Highcross Street, Leicester, LE1 4NN, UK

Across the globe, comedians are becoming politicians and politicians are becoming comedians. Do politicians make successful comedians? Do comedians make good politicians? Why are so many politicians attempting comedy and vice-versa? These questions, and more, will be hotly debated by an expert panel. Come along and have your say!

Panellists include:

James Brassett (Reader in International Political Economy at the University of Warwick)

Delia Chiaro (Professor of English Language and Translation at the University of Bologna and elected President of the International Society for Humor Studies (ISHS))

Kate Fox (stand-up poet, comedian, writer and practice-based researcher at the University of Leeds)

Peter Wilkin (Reader in Sociology and Communications at Brunel University London)

Please reserve your free place here.

We are also pleased to announce that we have one £50.00 travel grant available for a low-income researcher or PhD student attending this event. Please email Simon Weaver by Wednesday 7th February 2018 if you wish to apply. To apply please send a short paragraph (max 250 words) explaining why you wish to attend 'Is That Funny?': Comedy and Politics / Politics and Comedy.

This event is also part of the Beyond a Joke Series - a series of talks and events exploring contemporary issues in stand-up comedy organised by Big Difference Company, Centre for Comedy Studies Research (CSSR), De Montfort University and Beyondthejoke.
