Brunel University of London is proud to participate in the University of London (UoL) Scholars Programme. The scheme was established to support UoL’s strategy to help young people across London flourish and is designed to help undergraduate students in financial need.

Award details

The scholarships will offer cash awards to full-time Home fee paying new students entering Year 1 or continuing students entering Year 2 of a full time Undergraduate course at Brunel University of London and Brunel Pathways College (BPC) from September 2025. The Scholarship aims to support students from low-income households in London to successfully complete their programme of study at Brunel.

Priority in allocating the award will be given to exceptional students coming from low income households who need financial support in order to successfully complete their programme of study at Brunel.

Students

Up to 3 £10,000 cash awards for current students progressing into their second year

The scholarship will offer a cash award of £5,000 per year for the remainder of the course, subject to the course length.

Payment will not be made in a placement or Integrated Master’s year of any course.  

Applicants

1 £30,000 cash award for a new applicant coming to Brunel 

 

The scholarship is a total of £30,000, split evenly across the programme i.e. £10,000 per year for a three year degree, £7,500 for a four-year degree and £6,000 per year for an MBBS programme. Payment will be made in instalments split evenly across the academic year.

Payment will not be made in a foundation year or in a placement year of any course.

 The scholarship will be distributed evenly across the program of study to help students successfully complete their studies without financial stress.

Scholarship awards in subsequent years will only be paid once confirmation has been received in relation to successful progression by students. Scholarship winners will be required to remain in contact with the Development and Alumni Relations Team at Brunel each semester to review progress and plans. Students failing to meet the desired goals risk having the scholarship removed.

Application process:

To be considered for the scholarship:

Students

MUST complete the 'CURRENT STUDENT' application form, which requires them to explain why they are a suitable recipient of the scholarship (a written statement will be requested as part of the application).

MUST submit two letters of reference, of which one must be from a member of staff/faculty at Brunel. The second referee should be someone you know in a professional setting such as landlord, manager, mentor, coach etc. Applicants should apply for the scholarship and attach the references to the form before submitting the application.

Applicants that do not provide two references will not be considered for the award.

Applicants

MUST complete the 'APPLICANT' application form, which requires them to explain why they are a suitable recipient of the scholarship (a written statement will be requested as part of the application).

MUST submit two letters of reference, of which one must be from a recent teacher. Letters from family and friends are not valid. Your referee should be someone you have known in a professional standing – employer, teacher, mentor etc.

Applicants should apply for the scholarship and then follow up by sending the references by email to scholarships@brunel.ac.uk please use the subject line UOL Scholarship references and provide your application ID number.

Applicants that do not provide two references will not be considered for the award.

Evidence of eligibility criteria will also be required; this includes address and household income. Full details of the evidence required can be found below in section 2 ‘Proof of Eligibility’.

Deadline: Applications must be submitted by midnight on 17th October 2025 and will only be accepted if:

  • All sections of the application form have been completed.
  • 2 references have been provided.
  • The applicant/student is a Home fee paying student, from London, holding an offer on a full-time undergraduate course starting in September 2025 or successfully progressing into their second year of study at Brunel. This information will be taken from the course application for incoming applicants and from Colleges for continuing students.

Late applications will not be considered.

By accepting the scholarship, the applicant is agreeing to:

  • Be bound by the terms and conditions set out in their scholarship offer.
  • Consent to University departmental support, the Development and Alumni Relations Team will make contact each semester to review progress and plans.
  • Payment of the award is based on successful completion of each semester and academic progression status. The Development and Alumni will outline any other requirements.
  • Scholarship winners will be required to remain in contact with the Development and Alumni Relations Team each semester to review progress and plans. Students failing to meet the desired goals risk having the scholarship removed.
  • Scholarship holders will represent Brunel University of London and possibly the University of London at various promotional activities throughout their time at the University.
  • Students will be contacted by UoL or Brunel to assess the impact of the scheme. Participation is not mandatory and scholarship holders may be contacted with invitations to participate in activities such as surveys, focus groups and interviews, in order to evaluate the University’s financial support package. Scholarship holders will be contacted as and when participation is required. If a student chooses not to participate, their scholarship award will not be affected.

Data pertaining to scholarship holders such as: progression rates, degree attainment, degree completion, and graduate outcomes may also be analysed in order to understand the effectiveness of bursaries and scholarships. This data may also be linked to other data already held by the University for the purpose of better understanding the impact of bursaries and scholarships on under-represented groups. Eligibility

To be eligible for a scholarship an applicant must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Must hold an offer of a place on a Full Time Undergraduate course starting at FHEQ Level 4 (including Foundation year, Placement routes and Undergraduate Integrated Masters programmes). Continuing students should have progressed succesfully into their second year. Payment will not be made in a placement year.
  • Offer must be ‘Unconditional Firm’ (UF) by the date the Scholarship Allocation Panel make their awards in September (i.e. applicant must have met all offer conditions and firmly accepted the place).
  • Must commence or continue the course in the upcoming academic year (applicants for deferred entry will not be considered for a scholarship).
  • Have been assessed as a Home fee payer for fee purposes based on the UK government regulations. Applicants who are unsure of their fee status should note Brunel uses the information they have provided in their application form to assess fee status against regulations set by the UK government. For information on these regulations please visit the independent organisation UKCISA’s website.
  • Must have submitted a completed scholarship application and provided two references before the 17th October 2025 deadline.
  • Must be ordinarily resident in the UK (includes those living in England, Wales, Northern Ireland, Scotland) and live in London.
  • Must have consented to the sharing of household income submitted to the Student Loans Company (SLC) with the University. Applicants should note that without consenting to share their information Brunel cannot access any information relating to Household Income. This will result in the applicant not being considered for this award.
  • Priority in allocating awards will be given to applicants from a low-income household (£25,000 pa or less, as defined in the ‘Eligibility Definitions’ below). Please note all applicants, but particularly Clearing applicants, must ensure that they inform the SLC at the earliest opportunity that they are attending Brunel. This will then ensure that the SLC can provide relevant evidence confirming the applicant meets the conditions relating to household income. The SLC application must be approved no later than 17th October 2025. Failure to do this or if the applicant’s SLC assessment and application have not been approved by 17th October 2025 will result in the applicant not being considered for this award.
  • Current students will be required to meet the above criteria and successfully progress to the second year of their course.

Scholarships will be awarded to those who meet the eligibility criteria at the time of allocation.

As there are a limited number of awards available, Scholarship awards are not guaranteed for all applicants who meet the eligibility criteria.

2.2 Those not eligible for this Scholarship

  • Applicants/students who are not from London or classified as Overseas Channel Islands or Isle of Man
  • Applicants/students applying for or on a part time study route.
  • Applicants/students entering or on a Postgraduate course at Brunel.
  • Applicants who will not commence their course in September 2025.
  • Applicants entering a course with the Brunel Language Centre (BLC).
  • Applicants entering a course at FHEQ Level 5 or FHEQ Level 6. Current students will be considered for the Student scholarship.

2.3 Eligibility Definitions

Low Income

Those with an annual residual household income of £25,000 or less. [Residual income is the household income before tax and after any pension contributions or allowances for dependent children.] For full time students, a full and complete/approved financial assessment must have been carried out by the SLC, and agreement must have been given by the student and their sponsor(s) to share this data. This assessment must have been completed by 31st August 2025 and it is the responsibility of the student to ensure this has been completed by the SLC. Failure to do this will result in the applicant not being considered for the award.

London residence

Applicants/students must reside in the London area. The application record will be used to verify address.

2.4  Proof of Eligibility

 Household income:

To evidence ‘Low Income,’ full time students must have provided the SLC with sufficient information to enable a full financial assessment to have been carried out before 17th October 2025, and the student and sponsor(s) have provided their consent to share this data. Brunel will use the result of the assessment to confirm ‘Low Income’ eligibility. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that SLC have fully carried out the income assessment by 17th October 2025. If evidence is not supplied to the SLC, the applicant will not be considered for the Scholarship.

The deadline for all evidence to be assessed is 17th October 2025, unless otherwise stated.

Allocation

3.1 Eligibility criteria are reviewed annually.

3.2 The University will assess each applicant that has submitted an application for the scholarship against the eligibility criteria listed above and will use the information provided at the time of the course application and scholarship application to do so. Applicants are considered for scholarships using the information provided at the time of their application only and cannot be reconsidered should their circumstances change during the course of their studies. Scholarships cannot be backdated.

3.3 Applications will be considered on the balance of eligibility criteria met by each applicant.

3.4 Applicants awarded the scholarship will not be eligible for any other Brunel scholarship, bursary or discount. This includes the Care Leaver and Estranged Bursary and the Family Discount.

3.5 Scholarship awards will be decided by the Scholarship Allocation Panel.

3.6 Scholarships will be formally awarded in November 2025. Successful recipients will be informed by email shortly after allocation.

3.7 Scholarships are awarded for the current academic year only and cannot be deferred to alternate months or years of entry. Applicants who intend to defer their studies or awarded students who defer after being awarded a Scholarship will lose the scholarship award.

3.8 Successful students will be contacted by the end of November. The University is unable to contact all applicants who have applied for the scholarship and have been unsuccessful. We are unable to discuss individual’s application outcome and are not able to respond to an individual as to why an application has been unsuccessful. If you have not heard from Brunel by the end of November, please assume that you have been unsuccessful.

3.9 The decision of the Scholarship Allocation Panel is final. Any appeals in respect of the allocation process should be referred to the admissions policy. An appeal will only be considered in line with procedural irregularities, where a student believes that the University has not followed the procedures stated within the relevant Scholarship or Bursary Terms and Conditions and there is reasonable doubt as to whether the outcome might have been different had the error not occurred. Any appeals relating to Scholarship or Bursary allocation must be lodged within the student’s first academic year at the University. Brunel will not be able to consider later appeals.

Payment

4.1 The scholarship will be paid in three Instalments over an academic year.

4.2 Successfully awarded students will be asked to supply relevant UK bank account details to support receipt of the cash payments by no later than 5 December 2025.

4.3 Payment dates

The bursary will be paid in three instalments follows:

Payment 1 12 December 2025

Payment 2 27 February 2026

Payment 3 15 May 2026

Payment will depend on successful completion of each semester. Scholarship winners will be required to remain in contact with the Development and Alumni Relations Team at Brunel each semester to review progress and plans. Students failing to meet the desired goals risk having the scholarship removed.

4.4 Conditions of Payment:

  • Payments will only be made providing the student is enrolled at the University on an undergraduate degree with any required evidence having been verified by the date specified in section 2 above.
  • Payment in subsequent years will only be made providing the student progresses to the next level of study [scholarship payments will not be made during a repeating year until the student has satisfactorily progressed to the next level].

N.B. Payments will be made directly to a UK bank account and therefore students are required to supply accurate bank account details via their eVision account within the requested time. Failure to provide current valid UK Bank account details will result in delayed payment.

4.5 Students will be written to in September of each year to confirm ongoing eligibility to receive their award except placement year (if applicable).

Withdrawal of bursary

5.1 Misleading information: The University reserves the right to withdraw a scholarship from anyone who is found to have misled the University about any aspect of their eligibility and to seek repayment of any monies already paid by appropriate means.

5.2 Mode of Attendance Change: If a student changes to a different mode of study, their eligibility for a scholarship will be reviewed and may be withdrawn.

5.3 Changing course and starting again at FHEQ Level 4: Students who commence their studies and subsequently make an alteration that involves starting again at FHEQ Level 4 will not be eligible for a new award against the new course. The existing scholarship award will be placed on hold and reinstated once the student commences FHEQ Level 5. If a student changes course but remains at the same level of study, this will not have an impact on the award.

5.4 Abeyance/Temporary Withdrawal: If a student who is in receipt of a scholarship takes a period of temporary withdrawal (abeyance), the scholarship will be withdrawn.

5.5 Suspension of Study: Should a student be suspended for any reason, the scholarship award would be withdrawn and consideration of reinstatement will be dependent on the disciplinary outcome. This excludes suspension under SR11.

5.6 Repeat/Extended Study: Repeat periods of study, and periods of temporary withdrawal that result in extended periods of study, are not supported by additional cash payments. Scholarship entitlement is for the maximum duration of each award and entitlement is not extended if overall course duration alters.

5.7 Withdrawal from Study: A student who withdraws from their programme prior to completion and who is in receipt of a scholarship award will not normally be requested to repay scholarship payments made up to the point of withdrawal; however, entitlement to all future scholarship payments and/or adjustments, cease immediately when a student withdraws from Brunel University of London.
