Why volunteer as an international student?
Volunteering is an integral part of student life at Brunel. It gives you the opportunity to:
- Meet new people and make friends.
- Develop valuable skills such as teamwork, communication, leadership and problem-solving.
- Become part of the local community and learn more about UK culture.
- Gain practical experience that can strengthen your CV.
- Increase your confidence and enhance your employability after graduation.
Brunel University of London strives to offer volunteering opportunities suitable for all students; however, there are certain exceptions where your choices may be restricted because of the limitations within the study visa you hold.
Am I allowed to volunteer?
If you're an international student at Brunel, you should check the conditions of your visa or entry clearance before starting any volunteering role.
Some volunteering opportunities may be classified as ‘unpaid work' so it is important to understand the difference and ensure the role complies with your visa conditions. Taking part in activities that are not permitted could affect your immigration status.
Volunteering during term time
If you hold a Student Visa, the number of hours you can work or volunteer during term time is limited by your visa conditions. In most cases, this is up to 20 hours per week, including part-time employment. However, you should always check your individual visa conditions, as restrictions may vary.
Term time is defined by the University and depends on your course and level of study. Students and staff should refer to the University's Rights to Work guidance for the official academic year term dates.
It’s your responsibility to ensure that you do not exceed the weekly working or volunteering hours permitted by your visa. Your visa vignette or digital immigration status will confirm any work restrictions that apply.
Student Visitor Visa
If you hold a student visitor visa, you're not permitted to volunteer or work whilst you're studying at Brunel.
