Professor Savvas Tassou

Savvas TassouProfessor Savvas Tassou is Head of the School of Engineering and Design.

"I’ve been at Brunel for nearly 20 years and during this time I’ve had many responsibilities ranging from the development and management of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, heading up academic areas such as Mechanical Engineering and undertaking research – I currently lead a large team of research staff and PhD students.

Research-informed teaching is one of the most important functions of a university academic. My undergraduate studies in mechanical engineering coincided with the energy crisis of the late '70s and this stimulated my interest in research in energy and energy conservation.

The emphasis of recent externally-funded work has been on the reduction of the environmental impacts of food refrigeration systems through design optimisation and control.

The School is research-intensive, reflected by two 5 grades (out of a maximum 5*) in two units of assessment in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise. Our postgraduate programmes are informed by this research and mirror the particular interests and expertise of academic staff.

One of our main aims over the next few years is to improve our postgraduate provision still further by offering new programmes that address both current and future technological developments and reflect industrial needs and student interests. This can be seen in the titles of the courses outlined in the following pages."
