Through expert teaching and support, Education at Brunel will provide the strong foundation needed to make a difference to people's lives in a variety of educational contexts.
Brunel University of London has a long and successful tradition of Initial Teacher Education dating back to 1798. The University, in partnership with a diverse range of schools and settings, is one of the largest providers of teacher education in West London, extending into the Home Counties.
At Brunel we offer the full route into teaching and many of our students progress from our Education BA onto one of our highly regarded Postgraduate Certificate of Primary Education (PGCE) courses. Our Primary and Secondary PGCEs will give you the skills and qualifications to gain employment as teachers and progress into leadership and management roles in schools or in the wider world of education.
The Education Department at Brunel was highly praised for their Partnership work in the 2023 Ofsted inspection.
The report praised how the course enables student teachers to see themselves as lifelong learners who seek to improve and hone their practice.
The inspectors wrote that the ITE curriculum is broad, ambitious and informed by pertinent research in both the primary and secondary phases, and that it focuses on developing the professional conduct and behaviours expected of a teacher.
The report added that student teachers value the emphasis placed on promoting inclusion and ambition for all pupils; are well prepared for the realities of a career in teaching; and enjoy particularly positive relationships with their university tutors, who check in on them regularly.
We understand that learning and development can take place in a wide range of environments, so we provide a balanced view of educational theory, policy and practice within a variety of educational contexts. This means student-teachers will have a strong foundation whether they choose to go into teaching, or whether they’re considering fields like educational psychology, social work or counselling for example.
Student-teachers will be supported and surrounded by academics who have a wealth of expertise and experience in education and teaching. Their first-hand experiences will help develop a deeper understanding of the concepts encountered in different educational settings and insight into a range of different careers and opportunities in education. Learning experiences will also benefit from the wide variety of different students who choose to come and study Education at Brunel. Whether they’ve recently finished formal education and would like to progress, or whether they are looking to have a change in career direction, or enhance their existing knowledge, they are likely to find others in a similar position on the course. This creates a learning community in which student-teachers will work closely to share ideas, inspiration and opportunities, regardless of age or background.
