The BrunELT is suitable for you if you:
- Hold a conditional offer for a place at Brunel University but do not have the required IELTS score
- Hold an IELTS score but have not yet reached the required English entry level for your academic course.
- Are currently abroad and intend to study at Brunel University or Brunel Pathway College (for further details about BrunELT in your country please select the Overseas Testing tab)
On-campus Brunel English Language Tests are now running the tests online (£52 fee applies). Please note, if you want to take the BrunELT a second time, you must wait 8 weeks from the date of your first test. This is to give you time to work on your English so you can raise your grade. If you do not reach the grade you need, you can take one of our online English courses.
Please sign up for your preferred choice of date. Please note tests take place on a Friday afternoon (UK time) every other week. Please note that the test can take 3 to 4 hours.
The Brunel English Language Test has been developed by Brunel Language Centre to evaluate English Language ability. The test is well established and is available for Brunel applicants, current Language Centre students and external candidates.
The BrunELT provides an excellent opportunity for those who need to provide evidence of English Language ability in order to join a course at Brunel University London or Brunel Pathway College. The test can also help to establish if you require any additional English Language teaching before your academic studies.

Preparing for your Test
The best way to prepare for the BrunELT is to read a quality newspaper, magazine or journal and listen to BBC news in English. You should try and work on increasing your vocabulary and noticing how the language is used. The internet also provides a great source for helping you to improve your English skills e.g. Ted Talks and British Council - Learn English.
You can also:
- Practise writing an essay of 300-700 words on a subject of general interest, such as crime, education or global warming.
- Practise speaking about yourself.
- Take our practice Listening, Reading and Grammar test here.
BrunELT is done online via Zoom. If you are unsure if Zoom works in your country or if you have not used it before, please click here and test it before your exam.
Online Exam Rules
You must have access to TWO devices with camera and wifi access!
Before you sit your test, you will need to email your ID in the form of a ‘selfie’ (picture of your face and your passport) as shown in Picture 1 below. Please email your selfie with your passport page clearly showing you photo, name and date of birth to BrunELT@brunel.ac.uk.

An online exam is very similar to exams which you would take inside university lecture theatres. All exams are invigilated and any form of cheating is unacceptable. You will need to sit at a clear desk in front of your computer, alone in the room (and not lie on your bed). You also need a smartphone with the rear-facing camera showing you during the whole exam uninterruptedly. If the connection is lost or the image and sound get interrupted, the exam results will be invalid.
The tests are recorded for security: recordings are stored on University drive for 7 years and are only referred to check unusual behaviour in an exam and possibly by the UK Visa and Immigration inspectors as evidence that this test has taken place.
Pictures 2 and 3 below show the necessary setup – with the full view of your head, hands and laptop. The photo below shows the necessary setup – with the full view of your head, hands and laptop. You will need two devices, such as a laptop and a phone and both devices must have a camera and a microphone. At the beginning of your exam you need to turn the camera 360 degrees around your room to show that there is nobody else inside, that there are no other devices or any materials near you, even on the floor. You need to show the invigilators that all other devices are off. Jewellery and watches are not permitted. Only your computer can be on the desk. Your mouth, ears and hands must be visible at all times. You must be wearing appropriate clothing. Headsets can only be worn for Listening and Speaking. Food is not permitted but you can drink water. If you choose to use paper to write your answers, you need to take a photo immediately after the test has finished and send it to the invigilator. If your email is sent late, the exam result will be invalid.

Make sure the batteries of your devices are sufficiently charged and/or plugged-in as both devices will have their cameras on during the whole exam.
Results
You will receive your results 1 week after you have taken the test. Your results will be sent to the email address you provided in the online application (please note that, unfortunately, we cannot give results out over the phone). Test results will be invalid if there is no or interrupted camera footage. Depending on your application status, we will inform you of one of the following:
Met Entry Requirements
If you have already applied to Brunel (or Brunel Pathway College) and your BrunELT results meet the required level for your course, we will inform you of this and update your records to show you have met the English condition. If you have reached the required English level for your course, you still have the opportunity to attend the 6-week Pre-sessional course to further develop your English skills before you start your academic course.
Fallen Below Entry Requirements and need to take an online, face-to-face English course
If you have fallen slightly below the entry requirements for direct entry and you already hold IELTS with a minimum score of 4.0 with 4.0 in each sub section, you may be able to join one of our English courses. If this is not the case, we will advise you on how to proceed. Please note that if you have fallen below the requirements and you do not hold IELTS with a minimum of 4.0, you can still be placed on an appropriate pre-sessional course if you apply for the 'online only' option.
Not applied to Brunel for a degree course
If you only wish to study English, please apply for an English course or email language.centre@brunel.ac.uk. The BrunELT (£33) is only for students applying for a degree course.

Test Structure
The format of the BrunELT Travel Test differs slightly to the structure of the test we offer on Brunel campus. The test includes three sections: Reading, Listening and Writing.
Reading
A written text, where you have to demonstrate your understanding by answering comprehension, vocabulary and reference questions.
Time allowed 30 minutes
Listening
You will be required to listen to an academic lecture and show your understanding by answering a number of questions related to the lecture. The test is divided into two sections. Before the lecture begins you will receive the question paper for Parts A and B. You will be given 5 minutes to read the questions and think about the kind of answers you are expected to give.
Part A: You will fill in gaps with numbers or words as you listen to the lecture. The questions in Part A test your ability to understand and note down discrete facts. You should write the exact words of the lecturer
Part B: You are required to answer a range of question types. You may be expected to decide whether statements are true or false, sometimes justifying your answer. You may also have to answer open questions, multiple choice questions and questions about steps in a process. You need to answer all the questions in Part B while you listen to the lecture. In this section of the test, you need to demonstrate your understanding of key ideas and processes and your ability to select key information, while discarding irrelevant facts. You can use your own words or the lecturers words
Time allowed 20 minutes
Writing
You will be given a choice of two essay titles, from which you need to choose one to write approximately 300-700 words on the subject area.
Time allowed 45 minutes
Speaking
You will be given a short interview with the examiner. You will be asked questions on subjects such as your hobbies, studies and your home country. This will be recorded.
