How do I deposit my paper in BRAD?

We are asking all researchers publishing in journals to change the way they deal with Open access to make all articles available open access immediately upon publication. This will keep our research compliant with the changing requirements of our funders including all UKRI funding councils, and will meet the expected requirements for the next REF.

To ensure compliance, academic staff will simply need to deposit their accepted manuscripts (the version after peer review but prior to publisher typesetting) into BRAD as soon as they receive an acceptance notification from the publisher. The staff in the library's Open Research and Rights team will then check for copyright restrictions and publisher imposed embargoes before making the publication open access via BURA, Brunel's institutional repository.

Depositing in BRAD

It is very simple to deposit papers in BRAD. Once you have logged in you will see the ‘accepted for publication?’ prompt on the right hand side of the page. If you click on the ‘deposit your work’ button you will be asked to record information for either a journal article or conference paper.

Once you have entered all the necessary information (title, author(s), journal, date of acceptance) you will be asked to deposit a file. This is where you will upload your accepted manuscript so that it can be made visible in BURA. Once you have uploaded the file you will need to click the ‘deposit my publication’ button to complete the process.

For a full outline of how to use BRAD please consult the BRAD Libguide or watch the video below. Please note, the narrator on the video makes reference to HEFCE and RCUK which were superseded in 2018 by United Kingdom Research and Innovation (UKRI). Please follow the current guidance - UKRI's policy for the next REF was updated in April 2022.
