Janna Aljoubory is a Doctoral Researcher in Chemical Engineering under the supervison of Dr. Kok Siew Ng and Dr. Eleni Iacovidou, specialising in a Systems Analysis of Energy-from-Waste integrated with Carbon Capture and Storage technologies for the UK to reach Net Zero before 2050.
Her PhD research project investigates how energy-from-waste (EfW) integrated with carbon capture and storage (CCS) can be deployed at commercial scale to support the UK’s net-zero and waste management targets. The research evaluates both incineration and gasification based EfW technologies, combining techno-economic assessment (TEA), including process simulation modelling on Aspen Plus, and life cycle assessment (LCA) to assess the technical performance, economic viability and environmental impacts of EfW+CCS.
Beyond individual plant performance, the research takes a whole-system perspective using system dynamics modelling to examine how EfW+CCS deployment could interact with projected recycling rate and national decarbonisation targets. The research also explores improvement strategies and optimisation pathways to identify the deployment approaches required for successful UK wide commercial implementation. By linking plant-level performance with wider system dynamics, the research provides practical evidence for developing scalable and sustainable EfW+CCS pathways capable of contributing to the UK’s transition to net zero.
