Summary

Shirley is a Research Fellow in the Division of Global Public Health, Department of Health Sciences, Brunel University London. Her research interests include health policy evaluation, infectious and non-communicable diseases, childhood disabilities, stakeholder research and health promotion. She contributed to evaluating the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of the WHO flagship program, FCTC2030. She also contributed to developing the Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA) for the Hillingdon Council in 2021. Shirley’s recent study on the determinants of long COVID and prolonged COVID-19-related hospitalisations in Ghana contributed to COVID-19 mitigating policy discourses in Ghana. She has reviewed several manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals, including the BMC Health Services Research.

In addition to her research, Shirley also provides academic teaching and learning support to students in the MSc Public Health and Health Promotion program at Brunel University. She was also the co-chair and Doctoral Researcher (DR) Rep on Brunel’s PGR Student Experience Committee (SEC) and the DR Rep for the Health Department’s Research Ethics Committee.

Shirley is a physiotherapist by background. Her crucial role in delivering physiotherapy services to patients with COVID-19 at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in Ghana was recognised and awarded a presidential honour by the President of Ghana in 2023. Before joining Brunel, She was the Head of the Physiotherapy Department at the Ga East Municipal Hospital in Ghana, contributing to establishing a full-fledged physiotherapy department in the municipality. She was also among the team that established physiotherapy departments in the Tarkwa Municipal Hospital and La General Hospital in Ghana.

Shirley is a meticulous organiser. She was the lead organiser for the College of Health, Medicine and Life Science’s 8th PGR conference at Brunel University London. She also supported organising the World Bank’s capacity-building workshop for civil servants in Ghana. Shirley is a Chevening Scholar and a member of the Organisation for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) and the Ghana Physiotherapy Association (GPA).
