Dr Shirley Crankson
Lecturer in Public Health

Summary

Shirley is a Lecturer in Public Health in the Division of Global Public Health, Department of Health Sciences, Brunel University London. Her research interests include infectious diseases, health policy evaluation, health promotion and stakeholder research.

Her recent research acitivities include evaluating the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of the WHO flagship program, FCTC2030, developing a Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA) for the Hillingdon Council in 2021, and co-leading research partnership activities between Brunel and international universities in West Africa.

Shirley’s work on the determinants of long COVID and prolonged COVID-19-related hospitalisations in Ghana provided preliminary evidence that advanced Ghana's policy discourses on COVID-19 mitigation.

She was awarded a presidential honour by the President of Ghana in 2023 for her distinguished contribution to addressing the burden of COVID-19 in Ghana.   

Before joining Brunel, She was the head of the physiotherapy department at the Ga East Municipal Hospital in Ghana, contributing to establishing a full-fledged physiotherapy department in the municipality. She was also among the team that established physiotherapy departments in the Tarkwa Municipal Hospital and La General Hospital in Ghana.

She is a Chevening Scholar, a member of the Organisation for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) and the British Academy Early Career Researcher Network.
