Research Festival: Manufacturing

Smart Manufacturing and Materials Innovation

Welcome to the Institute of Materials and Manufacturing

Institute Director, Professor Hamid Bahai, introduces a variety of presentations from Brunel colleagues, industry partners and academic collaborators to unveil some of the essential research being undertaken across the Institute of Materials & Manufacturing that is delivering solutions to critical challenges across the sector.

Programme

  • Welcome - Professor Hamid Bahai, Institute Director, Brunel University London
  • Mesh reduction methods for modelling material degradation & failure  -  Professor Ferri Alaiabadi, Professor of Aerostructures, Imperial College London
  •  Isogeometric Method for Fracture Modelling  - Lin Chen, Post-Doctoral Researcher, Brunel University London
  •  Digital Twins for Safe CO2 Storage - Adrian Rodriguez-Herrera, Doctoral Researcher – Computational Mechanics, Brunel University London and Geomechanics Technology Consultant, Schlumberger
  •  Simulation of the blade-off event for an open rotor engine  -  Dr Nenade Djordjevic, Brunel University London

Official Close of the Research Festival and Doctoral Researcher Poster Competition Award Winner

Join Brunel's Provost, Professor Rebecca Lingwood, for the grand finale of the Brunel Research Festival and the announcement of the Doctoral Researcher Poster Competition.

We'll look back at highlights from the month of festivities, discuss the Brunel Research Strategy, and hear from our Doctoral Researchers about their award winning projects in each challenge area.

Open Lecture: Tinkering and Talking: Undervalued Engineering Skills

Part of our Open Lecture series, we're delighted to present the Inaugural Lecture of Professor Lucy Rogers – Royal Academy of Engineers Visiting Professor of Engineering: Creativity and Communication at Brunel University London – on ‘Tinkering and Talking: Undervalued Engineering Skills’.

Engineers are not renown for their creativity – or their social skills. This lecture highlights where the education system has stifled creativity in the past and highlights how and where engineers have overcome this to produce innovative products that have positively affected lives. It also looks at communication skills –from comedy to storytelling - and shows that engineering is not mutually exclusive from entertainment. By combining both Creativity and Communication skills, engineers are going to change the world.
