XAIHealth: Explainability for Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Healthcare Sector

We are recruiting new Doctoral Researchers to our EPSRC funded Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) PhD studentships starting 1 October 2023. Applications are invited for the project XAIHealth: Explainability for Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Healthcare Sector

Successful applicants will receive an annual stipend (bursary) of approximately £19,668, including inner London weighting, plus payment of their full-time home tuition fees for a period of 42 months (3.5 years).

You should be eligible for home (UK) tuition fees there are a very limited number (no more than three) of studentships available to overseas applicants, including EU nationals, who meet the academic entry criteria including English Language proficiency.

You will join the internationally recognised researchers in the Department of Computer Science

The Project

The aim of the project is to aid clinical practitioners trust the medical diagnosis AI-based systems such as medical imaging and understand the predictions (classifications) made by these systems. You will be working with a team of experts on Artificial Intelligence (AI) to explore the latest advancements related to the Explainability of AI (XAI) and develop novel approach to interpret the results of AI models in the health and medical care sectors.

Applicants will have or be expected to receive a first or upper-second class honours degree in an Engineering, Computer Science, Design, Mathematics, Physics or a similar discipline. A Postgraduate Masters degree is not required but may be an advantage.

Skills and Experience

Applicants will be required to demonstrate their knowledge in:

(1) Machine Learning

(2) Deep Learning

(3) Familiarity with Explainable AI

(4) Conducting Literature Review (LR)

(5) Familiarity with different research methods

You should be highly motivated, able to work independently as well as in a team, collaborate with others and have good communication skills.

Meet the Supervisor(s)

Alaa Marshan - Dr Alaa Marshan is a lecturer at the Computer Science Department, where he teaches a variety of topics related to data science, machine learning, high performance computation and business intelligence and integration. He has won multiple awards for his teaching excellence at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. At the research front, his research primarily focus on intelligent data analysis, applications of AI/ML and Natural Language Processing (NLP) to support decision making, explainable AI, information management and improving operational business information systems.
