Research area(s)

Dr Farid Arya has extensive experience in academic–industry collaboration, applied engineering research and consultancy, particularly in the areas of thermal insulation, energy-efficient buildings, renewable energy and advanced glazing technologies.

Since 2013, he has collaborated with a wide range of companies in the UK, Ireland and internationally, providing technical support to address engineering challenges and assist with the development and evaluation of new products. His industrial collaborations have included organisations working in insulation, construction, glazing and advanced materials, ranging from specialist SMEs to international companies such as AGC Glass Europe, Guardian Industries and Corning Incorporated. His work with industry has involved thermal performance assessment, experimental testing, product development and the application of academic research to practical engineering problems.

Dr Arya has also contributed to several externally funded research and innovation projects. These include an EPSRC-funded project on evacuated flat-plate solar collectors, the European Horizon 2020 project on advanced energy-efficient glazing façades, an Innovate UK project involving solar energy technologies, and an Invest Northern Ireland project on photovoltaic vacuum glazing. His involvement has included technical research, experimental development and collaboration with academic and industrial partners. The Horizon 2020 collaboration contributed to the development and commercialisation of an energy-efficient glazing system with an industrial partner.

Alongside his research and industrial activities, Dr Arya has undertaken a range of academic leadership and professional responsibilities. He has experience in course and module leadership, curriculum development, assessment design, quality assurance, examination boards and supervision of undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral research projects. He has also contributed to engineering degree apprenticeship provision and activities aimed at strengthening engagement between universities and industry.

Dr Arya is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and holds professional memberships with the Institution of Engineering Designers and the Institute of Physics. He has presented his research internationally and has been invited to speak at academic and industry-focused events, including the Northern Ireland Manufacturing & Supply Chain Expo and Conference.
