Designing the Future of UK-China RD&I Collaboration in the Museums and Galleries Sector

Our aim is to facilitate long-term RD&I collaboration between museums and galleries in the UK and China, especially in the field of immersive and interactive experiences.

The museums and galleries sector, which is the centre of the UK and China's creative industries, has experienced significant growth in recent years, making significant contributions to the cultures, societies and economies of both countries.

The two countries are exploring opportunities to use immersive and interactive technologies by creating opportunities for bilateral collaboration in the museums and galleries sector. However, despite the strong interest, there is still no concerted effort to drive this potentially highly valuable form of exchange between the UK and China forward strategically and continually at the sector-wide level.

How can a proactive and sustained UK-China collaboration be achieved in the museums and galleries sector?

This project aims to develop a strategic framework facilitating the long-term RD&I collaboration between museums and galleries in the UK and China, focusing on the immersive and interactive museum and gallery experiences.

The project will benefit:

(i) the museums and galleries in the UK and China looking to understand their counterpart's market and establish or grow their UK-China partnerships;

(ii) the sector-based creative businesses from both countries looking to start up or enhance their UK-China operations by applying new business models and widening business networks;

(iii) the researchers investigating the creative industries in the UK and China;

(iv) the government bodies and policymakers developing the methods to stimulate and monitor international collaboration activities and

(v) the UK-China museum and gallery audience with an interest in the transnational cultural exchange.

Meet the Principal Investigator(s) for the project

Dr Youngok Choi
Dr Youngok Choi - Youngok Choi is Professor of Design and Programme Director for MA Design Strategy and Innovation & Design and Branding Strategy at the College of Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences, Brunel University London. Her research specialises in Design Policy and Strategy, Social Innovation and User Experience (UX). She is Module Leader for DM5502 Design Research (MA Design Programmes and PhD in Design), DM5557/60 Design Research Project and DM5500 Dissertation (MA Design Programmes).  Youngok has taken on the role of Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator for various research and innovation initiatives funded by UKRI (UK Research and Innovation), industry, government bodies and public organisations. These projects have been funded by AHRC (Arts and Humanities Research Council), EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council), Samsung Electronics, and Samsung Design Europe. She has also spearheaded international knowledge transfer programmes in Design management and Service Innovation. Youngok has been invited to international design conferences and events as a keynote/invited speaker, including the User Centred Design conference, the Opening Symposium at Gwangju Design Biennale (GDB) and the International Conference on Global Cultural and Creative Industries. She is a committee member of the BSI (British Standards Institution), a steering committee member of Europe K-TAG (Korean Technology Advisory Group) at KIAT (Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology), and the editorial board of Design Works Journal.
