Principles of AI

Principles on the use of Generative AI in teaching and learning

Brunel University of London acknowledges the development and applications of Generative Artificial Intelligence software programs. We acknowledge the potential for Generative AI to transform education and work practices in higher education for staff and students. Given its potential to transform education and work practices, we'll ensure that Generative AI is used appropriately in teaching and learning. We'll establish a Working Group to regularly monitor developments in AI technologies and their use in education, identify challenges and opportunities and share information and effective practice. The Working Group will report to the University Education Committee, which will then update the University’s policies and guidelines regularly.

There are seven overarching principles that Brunel will embrace.

1. Definition of Generative AI. There are many uses and aspects of AI in higher education. In this document, we consider Generative AI to be a part of AI and include software such as CHAPTGPT, BARD, etc. and AIs that can generate images, presentations, assessments etc.

2. Transparency. We'll publish these principles so they are available to staff and students. We'll ensure that guidance on using Generative AI is clearly signposted.

3. Inclusivity. We'll identify key stakeholders and invite them to contribute to the discussion. This also includes engaging with the broader sector to contribute to and learn from the discussion. We'll develop strategies to ensure students are not disadvantaged if they do not use Generative AI or do not have access to it. If it's required, we'll ensure students have appropriate access.

4. GDPR Adherence. We'll ensure that staff and students using Generative AI for work and study will be confident in how the software owners use their data.

5. Training. Staff and students will receive clear guidelines on using Generative AI. Where appropriate, workshops and discussion groups will be available for staff to receive support in using Generative AI in education.

6. Monitor and Review. A Working Group consisting of academics and leaders has been established to review field developments and monitor the successful integration of this technology into our pedagogy.

7. Academic Integrity.  We'll work to ensure academic integrity is maintained through appropriate guidance on acceptable and unacceptable use. When Generative AI is used in assessment, its use must be declared.
