PhD projects for research students
Research supervision
Research supervision in the Rudolph Laboratory focuses on developing independent scientific thinking, experimental design and critical analysis within the broader context of DNA replication, genome stability and chromosome biology.
The laboratory regularly supervises undergraduate, MSc and PhD research students undertaking projects in molecular cell biology, DNA replication dynamics, genome stability, CRISPR-Cas biology, chromosome organisation and the impact of artificial sweeteners on cell viability and DNA replication dynamics. Projects combine molecular genetics, molecular cell biology and, through external collaborations, advanced single-molecule approaches.
A strong emphasis is placed on research-led student development and integration into active research projects. Undergraduate students frequently undertake voluntary laboratory placements and research experience projects, with a number subsequently progressing into Final Year Projects and contributing as co-authors on scientific publications. The laboratory has also hosted international visiting students through competitive exchange programmes. A number of these students have progressed into prestigious positions, both in industry and academia.
Current PhD supervision activities include primary supervision, secondary supervision and Research Development Advisor (RDA) roles. Particular interests include supporting students in the transition towards independent experimental design, scientific communication and analytical thinking.
