Post-Covid lifestyle and mental wellbeing

Engaging in different daily social and physical activities is vital for health and wellbeing. However, rapid advancements in digital technology and the recent COVID-19 pandemic have affected this engagement because they are fundamentally changing the way we communicate, live, work, and our lifestyle in general. Our proposed research project will investigate how engaging in different leisure (e.g., physical exercise, different types of entertainment, social activities) and non-leisure (e.g., (home) office computer work; face-to-face and online meetings) activities under different living and working environments affect our mental wellbeing and cognitive performance in the digital society we live in today.

We believe that our project has a high potential for profound impact. The plan is to start the project with investigating the impact on individuals’ lifestyles in their living environments on their health, mental wellbeing, and cognition. In a second step, this can easily be expanded to other scenarios, such as the aging population, clinical populations, or employees at the workplace, which provides a profound chance for widespread impact.


Meet the Principal Investigator(s) for the project

Dr Weifeng Chen
Dr Weifeng Chen - I am a Reader in Innovation Management and Strategy at Brunel Business School, specialising in strategic innovation, technology management, business model innovation, and executive decision-making. My work focuses on how organisations, public institutions, and innovation ecosystems harness emerging technologies and new forms of collaboration to create sustainable value, strengthen resilience, and address complex societal and economic challenges. My research is interdisciplinary and impact-oriented, spanning innovation ecosystems, strategic alliances, corporate governance, digital transformation, AI strategy, green technology adoption, circular economy transitions, and smart city innovation. I am particularly interested in how technological, organisational, and policy innovations can be combined to support sustainable development, net-zero transitions, productivity improvement, inclusive growth, and evidence-based decision-making. I have extensive experience in collaborative research and knowledge exchange with international organisations, industry partners, public-sector bodies, and policy stakeholders. My work has involved engagement with organisations including the United Nations, the European Union, and the British Council, as well as partnerships with businesses, local authorities, and community-facing organisations. This enables me to contribute effectively to interdisciplinary grant applications requiring strong academic leadership, stakeholder engagement, implementation pathways, and real-world impact. My consulting and advisory experience spans AI strategy, digital transformation, business model innovation, operational optimisation, strategic decision support, and sustainability transitions. I support organisations in navigating complex technological and market changes, translating research insights into practical strategies, and developing scalable models for innovation and transformation. My research has been published in leading international journals including the Journal of Business Research, Production Planning and Control, International Review of Administrative Sciences, Technological Forecasting & Social Change, Information Technology for Development, and Regional Studies. These publications reflect my contribution across innovation strategy, technology management, public administration, digital transformation, regional development, and sustainability-oriented innovation. Since completing my PhD in 2008, I have played a significant role in research leadership, doctoral supervision, and capacity building, supervising more than 20 PhD researchers to successful completion. I also deliver executive and academic programmes on strategy, innovation, technology adoption, and transformation across the UK, Asia, the EU, the GCC, and the USA, and serve internationally as an external examiner for management and marketing programmes and PhD examinations. For collaborative innovation projects, I bring industry-facing expertise in shaping innovation strategies, developing commercially viable business models, engaging key stakeholders, coordinating multi-partner collaborations, and translating research into practical solutions, policy influence, market opportunities, and measurable impact.
