Using archives and special collections

Our Reading Room is open (Monday to Friday, 9.30-3.30) by prior appointment only, subject to availability.

What you’ll need to present

All researchers are required to produce proof of identity and will need to complete a Reader Registration form on their first visit.

Please use our online catalogue to help you identify relevant material in advance of your visit.

In line with the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and the Environmental Regulations, the general records held in the University Archives are open to the public, unless specific exemptions apply. Records containing personal data may be exempt from disclosure under GDPR. 

Unable to visit the Reading Room?

We provide a research service for those unable to visit the Archives in person.

 Charges for our research service 2023:

  • £7.50 for an initial look up, i.e. a person, particular school
  • £7.50 per 30 minutes for more detailed research, time to be capped by you  
  • Further charges for photocopying or scanning may apply – please contact us for details.

We normally try to undertake the research within 2 weeks. 

We cannot undertake complex research or data analysis on your behalf.  In this case, you are welcome to arrange an appointment to visit us.
