I joined the Economics and Finance Department at Brunel University London as Lecturer in Accounting in August 2017. Prior to this, I completed my PhD in Accounting and Finance from Alliance Manchester Business School, The University of Manchester (in 2017) and MSc in International Accounting and Finance from Birmingham Business School, The University of Birmingham (in 2010).
I’m looking to supervise a Doctoral Researcher exploring an empirical accounting or finance topic that applies textual analysis techniques.
Over the past decade, research in this area has grown rapidly, helping us quantify narrative disclosures and understand how useful they are for capital market participants. This growth has opened up several promising avenues for new research. Textual analysis in accounting and finance is a key research interest of mine, and I’ve previously supervised PhD students working in this field.
As the primary supervisor, I’ll work closely with the researcher throughout the PhD. The aim is to develop at least three working papers that have the potential to be published in respected peer‑reviewed accounting and finance journals (for example, CABS 3* or above). When submitted, these papers will be co‑authored with the supervisor(s). During the PhD, there will also be opportunities to present this work at academic conferences.
You’ll learn to use textual analysis and natural language processing tools such as WordStat or CFIE‑FRSE. You may also need to take some econometrics and/or data analytics modules in your first year. All PhD students must attend mandatory researcher development training in their first year to build their skills as independent academic researchers.
I’m looking for a motivated applicant who wants to develop a strong PhD thesis and produce papers that can contribute to the field. If you’re interested, please email your CV to: Sheehan.Rahman@brunel.ac.uk. You don’t need to send a research proposal at this stage. Once I’ve reviewed your CV, I can arrange a meeting to discuss the PhD and answer any questions you may have.
How to apply
