Postgrad Gateway programme

Each Wednesday between 11:00 - 13:00 (BST) we're running a series of live online, interactive sessions to help you develop your study skills and prepare for university as a postgraduate student. We'll also have a series of English language lessons for our international students.

Please complete the forms below to book your place on our Postgrad Gateway programme.
Register your place on our study skills sessions. Once you have registered, each week we'll send you a link to join your session for the next event. You can join as many or as few sessions as you want and the programme is open to all - whether you're joining Brunel in September or planning to study elsewhere.

Register for our online English lessons below. Open to all international students, the lessons will run for three weeks and will then be repeated - you can either follow the lessons as a course or just choose one or two - it's up to you!

This week Dr Max Thistlethwaite will explain the basic principles of online learning. Learn how to write effective notes in and out of class, using techniques such as Linear, Cornell and Mind-mapping

Many students find it challenging to use prepositions accurately in English. In this short session, you'll learn how to use the most common prepositions of time and you’ll have a chance to play an engaging game in class!

12:00 - 12.45 Study skills: Research and fallacies
This lecture looks at the differences between primary and secondary data collection, the basics of quantitative and qualitative research and their advantages/disadvantages. Dr Max Thistlethwaite will also cover fallacies in arguments. What are they and how do you spot them?

12:00 - 12:50 Study skills: Referencing and paraphrasing 
This week Dr Max Thistlethwaite will show you how to reference perfectly. He will cover the basics of in-text citations, full references, formatting, joint reasons and triangulation. He will also show you how to paraphrase so you can transform others' writing into your own. Learn how to synthesise information to generate innovative ideas.

Studying online at a university is a different world in its own right …and with its own vocabulary! If you’d like to discover essential words related to Virtual Learning Environment, don’t miss this session. During a lively game, you’ll be able to see how much you can learn just 30 minutes!

12:00 - 12:50 Study skills: Presentations and final tips
In this lecture Dr Max Thistlethwaite will give you the tools to generate impactful presentations. He will explain what characteristics make a good speaker, how to deal with stage fright and how to get engagement from your audience. We close the study skills programme with some final tips: what separates an average student from a great one, classroom etiquette and the importance of time management.
