About the course
This MSc course in Advanced Electronic and Electrical Engineering is specifically designed for students who wish to pursue a broad programme of advanced studies, whilst also offering a wide range of specialist modules which open a variety of career pathways on graduation.
The distinctive feature of the MSc is its flexible structure – you are able to customise the content of your programme to meet your academic interests and career aspirations.
Core modules are used to ensure there is depth and breadth in key areas of electronic and electrical engineering – notably sensors and instrumentation, control, photonics, sustainable power systems, telecommunications, intelligent systems, medical systems, integrated circuits and embedded systems.

Covers the latest advanced techniques and strategies for project management, management tools, management and reporting methods and team building.
Advanced Analogue Electronics & Photonics
Covers electronic and photonic systems for sensors in general and key analogue circuits used as front-end drivers or pre-amplifiers.
Applied Sensors, Instrumentation and Control
Focuses on particular aspects of sensors, instrumentation and control through the use of real-world examples and the characteristics of sensors and associated systems. A group project activity based on the application of sensors, instrumentation and control techniques is part of this module.

Choose three modules with at least one from: Analogue Integrated Circuit Design, Embedded Systems Engineering, DSP for Communications and Intelligent Systems.
DSP for Communications
Covers real-time signal processing, reconfigurable computing and DSP/FPGA system architecture in the context of communication systems.
RF & Optical Communication Systems
Deals with design and operation of radio (Antennas, Amplifiers) and optical frequency systems and their integration into telecommunication systems
Embedded Systems Engineering
Covers real-time computing for embedded and control computer systems and the implementation of algorithms on embedded systems.
Focuses on intelligent systems techniques, DSP applications and implementing intelligent systems for given DSP problems
Focuses on computer networks, protocols/models for IP QoS provisioning.

English language requirements

If you require a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK, you must prove knowledge of the English language so that we can issue you a Certificate of Acceptance for Study (CAS). To do this, you will need an IELTS for UKVI or Trinity SELT test pass gained from a test centre approved by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) and on the Secure English Language Testing (SELT) list. This must have been taken and passed within two years from the date the CAS is made.
Should you wish to take a pre-sessional English course to improve your English prior to starting your degree course, you must sit the test at an approved SELT provider for the same reason.
We offer our own BrunELT English Test and have pre-sessional English language courses for students who do not meet requirements or who wish to improve their English. You can find out more information on English courses and test options at the Brunel Language Centre.
Teaching and learning
This course in Advanced Electronic and Electrical Engineering blends lectures, tutorials, laboratories, individual and group projects with presentations and a major research based dissertation project.
External lectures and research seminars will be used to enhance the student experience and highlight the application of the technologies in industry.
Assessment and feedback
You will be assessed on your written assignments, presentations, examinations and a major dissertation project.
The course comprises a blend of lectures, tutorials, laboratories, individual and group projects, presentations and a major research-based dissertation project, with external lectures and research seminars used to enhance your experience and highlight the application of the technologies in industry.
- The Electronic and Computer Engineering discipline is one of the largest in the University, with a portfolio of research contracts totalling £7.5 million, and has strong links with industry.

- Our laboratories are well equipped with an excellent range of facilities to support the research work and courses. We have comprehensive computing resources in addition to those offered centrally by the University. The discipline is particularly fortunate in having extensive gifts of software and hardware to enable it to undertake far-reaching design projects.

UK/EU students can opt to pay in six equal monthly instalments: the first instalment is payable on enrolment and the remaining five by Direct Debit or credit/debit card.
Overseas students can opt to pay in two instalments: 60% on enrolment, and 40% in January for students who commence their course in September (or the remaining 40% in March for selected courses that start in January).
