We provide a friendly and supportive learning environment, in which you will have the opportunity to improve your language skills, make friends and settle into life at Brunel and the UK.
Class sizes will be limited to a maximum of 12 and will often be smaller than that – smallest class will be 6. This is to allow for the best possible experience and to maintain safe social distancing.
You may study on campus or online. On campus courses may begin on campus in May or begin online and move to on campus later, probably in June. To be confirmed.

This course focuses on improving your academic English skills. Classes will include modules on:
- Research Skills and Academic Writing
- Presentation Skills
- Listening and Note-taking
- Seminar Skills
- Grammar and Vocabulary Development
The Pre-sessional course is a full-time programme and comprises 19 hours classroom study per week, plus a 10 minute tutorial. Classes will be scheduled Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm.
Subject Specific Classes
An important part of the teaching programme here at Brunel Language Centre are subject specific classes. These bring together students who will be studying similar degree courses and focus on the skills and vocabulary needed for those subject areas. Students can also get the opportunity to visit interesting London venues to explore their discipline outside of the classroom.

At the end of the programme, all students following the Pre-sessional programme will sit the Brunel English Language Test (BrunELT). You will be tested on your writing, reading, speaking and listening skills and will receive a score for each component as well as an overall score.
Progression onto Future Studies
To progress onto your academic course at Brunel you will need to pass the Pre-sessional course and achieve the required BrunELT score to meet the language requirements for your academic programme. You will usually not need to take any other English Test.

Improving language skills can take time. The length of English Language course that a student requires will be determined by their current English Language level in addition to the entry requirements for their chosen academic course.

Please note: You will only be able to apply for a Student Visa to undertake a Pre-sessional English course if you take the ‘IELTS for UKVI’ test. Some IELTS centres run both kinds of Academic IELTS so you must make sure you book the UKVI recognised Academic IELTS called ‘IELTS test for UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) purposes’.
