Pre-sessional English

Our Pre-sessional English courses have been designed to provide you with intensive English Language training before the start of your academic studies at Brunel. We provide a friendly and supportive learning environment, in which you will have the opportunity to improve your language skills, make friends and settle into life at Brunel and the UK.

This September and October you have the choice of learning face-to-face online or on face-to-face on campus. Brunel Language Centre’s autumn courses will begin on 23 September and 21 October and each will begin with a 3-day orientation programme.  Class sizes will be limited to a maximum of 12 and will often be smaller than that – smallest class will be 6.  This is to allow for the best possible experience and to maintain safe social distancing.

All of our courses are available online

Face-to-Face Online and On-Campus Teaching! (Delayed visa or flight? You can start online and come to the campus when you have your visa and flight. You still need to apply for a visa by the on-campus deadline).

Studying an online Pre-sessional English course that finishes in December 2020 will allow you to start your degree course on campus in January 2021.

Course Assessment

At the end of the programme, all students following the Pre-sessional programme will sit the Brunel English Language Test (BrunELT). You will be tested on your writing, reading, speaking and listening skills and will receive a score for each component as well as an overall score.

Progression onto Future Studies

To progress onto your academic course at Brunel you will need to pass the Pre-sessional course and achieve the required BrunELT score to meet the language requirements for your academic programme. You will usually not need to take any other English Test.

Here at the Brunel Language Centre, our aim is to help our students achieve the English Language scores they need to progress onto their chosen academic course.

Improving language skills can take time. The length of English Language course that a student requires will be determined by their current English Language level in addition to the entry requirements for their chosen academic course.

To help you decide how many weeks English Language you will need to undertake, please use the table available below. Remember that these are for guidance only. For specific advice please feel free to send your most recent English Language qualification to languagecentre@brunel.ac.uk
