Charlotte Hurcum's poem is inspired by her work with a care leaver.

Awake in Darkness

I awake to darkness

head heavy but whirling too

cold outside the sheets

I climb out of bed

sleep eluded too much worry

- How can I change things

How did I get here

Irish traveller no longer in motion

is this finally the journey's end.

Curtains open now

I see the flat - alone in thought

Feeling low with no one to talk too

Windows run with damp

anxiety of failure deepens,

time to speak up now

I offer my best self,

Everything does not have to be perfect

I have the power to make today great

Just believe in yourself

I do have the strength

Speak up then they will know
