Earning a PhD degree is not only an individual achievement but also a testament to the support and guidance I received from my supervisors, colleagues, and loved ones throughout my doctoral journey. Their encouragement, mentorship, and belief in my abilities have undoubtedly played a significant role in my success.

Tell us about your educational and/or career journey since you graduated from Brunel.

Upon graduating from Brunel, I pursued a path in academia, driven by my passion for research and teaching. After completing my PhD in Finance, I gained valuable research experience before transitioning into an assistant professorship role at Birzeit University, Palestine. In this position, I had the opportunity to contribute to the academic community through teaching and mentoring students, as well as conducting research in Banking. Recognising the importance of active engagement within the academic community, I have taken on leadership roles and invested in my professional development. I have attended various conferences, workshops, and seminars to expand my knowledge and network with other researchers. Looking ahead, I aspire to continue making meaningful contributions to the field of finance by further expanding my research agenda and collaborating with experts from diverse disciplines. I aim to mentor and inspire the next generation of finance professionals by imparting both theoretical knowledge and practical skills to prepare them for successful careers.

What does a typical day at work involve for you?

A typical day at work as an assistant professor in finance involves a diverse range of activities that balance teaching, research, and academic responsibilities. While the specific tasks may vary depending on the day or time of the academic year, a typical day might involve the preparation and delivery of lectures to undergraduate or graduate students, responding to student inquiries and providing guidance, engaging in independent research or collaborating with colleagues on research projects, administrative and committee responsibilities such as curriculum development, and program enhancements, engaging in self-directed learning or skill development, and mentoring students through guiding their research projects or career aspirations.

What’s been the highlight of your career journey so far?

The highlight of my career journey so far has been the successful completion of my PhD in Finance and the privilege of being supervised by Dr Dilruba Karim and Professor Philip Davis. This achievement represents years of dedication, hard work, and a deep passion for knowledge in the domain of finance. During my PhD journey, I had the opportunity to delve into advanced concepts, conduct extensive research, and contribute to the existing body of knowledge in finance. The guidance and mentorship provided were instrumental in shaping my research interests, refining my analytical skills, and broadening my understanding of the intricacies of the financial world.

How would you say your Brunel experience has helped you to get where you are today?

Overall, my Brunel experience has been instrumental in laying the foundation for my academic and professional success. The rigorous academic training, supportive faculty, research opportunities, and strong network have shaped my research interests, refined my skills, and provided the necessary resources to excel in the field of finance. Engaging with fellow researchers and faculty members through seminars, conferences, and workshops enriched my understanding of diverse perspectives and research approaches. I am grateful for the education and experiences gained at Brunel, which continue to influence and guide me in my current role as an assistant professor. Lastly, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude and appreciation for the generous support from Brunel, Birzeit University, and British Council who have sponsored my PhD studies through the HESPAL scholarship which has played a pivotal role in enabling me to pursue my academic and research aspirations.

I personally chose to study at Brunel University London for several compelling reasons, and I would highly recommend Brunel to others based on my positive experiences. What is your best memory of studying here?

The moment I received the decision from the VIVA committee, it marked the culmination of my academic journey and symbolised the achievement of my goal to have a PhD in finance. It is a memory that I will cherish and look back upon with immense pride and satisfaction. This milestone not only signifies my academic accomplishment but also represents personal growth, self-discovery, and the development of valuable skills and expertise. Earning a PhD degree is not only an individual achievement but also a testament to the support and guidance I received from my supervisors, colleagues, and loved ones throughout my doctoral journey. Their encouragement, mentorship, and belief in my abilities have undoubtedly played a significant role in my success.

University life is a unique period of exploration and self-discovery. It's a time when students have access to a wealth of resources, diverse perspectives, and a supportive community. What would be your top tip or key advice for new graduates as they begin their career journey after leaving Brunel?
