Brunel Institute for Bioengineering (BIB)
The Advanced Bioprocessing Centre (ABC) within the BIB conducts research into liquid-liquid chromatography, a technique for the purification or extraction of components from a mixture.
The ABC consists of four dedicated laboratories, housing different sizes of centrifuge, ranging from volumes of 5 ml to 18 litres; this allows purifications to be conducted from fractions of a milligram to kilograms per day. Necessary support equipment such as analytical instruments (HPLC, LC-MS, GC) and solvent evaporators are also available.
Scientists are researching the application of liquid-liquid chromatography in proteins and biomolecules, natural products and synthetic compounds, as well as into machine design, scale-up strategies and different modes of application, all involving the liquid stationary phase.
Further information may be seen in a video, “The Scale Up of Counter-current Chromatography.” The Centre also provides free workshop roadshows that demonstrate the equipment, see brochure.
