Games industry toasts winning team at student jam

Brunel games designers took home the trophy in the third Ukie Student Game Jam with a game they created in just 36 hours.

Twenty teams from universities across the country took part in the prestigious competition, which asked them to create a game from scratch with the support of a mentor from industry.

With just a day-and-a-half during the Easter break to complete the project, four of the team worked from the campus and a further two linked up from abroad to create Lost in Babel. Industry experts judged the game top for criteria including concept, playability, narrative, creativity and accessibility.

Team leader Joseph Juson said the team of second year students Oscar Barbosa, Ioana-Iulia Cazacu, Milly Gunn, Aimee White and Chee Yen Wang “pulled together brilliantly”.

He added: “We can’t quite believe how well our game has gone down but we’re so happy to have won. It’s amazing to see our work and ideas appreciated at this level.”

The team were aided in their efforts by industry mentor Elisha Brown from NextGen Skills Academy.

Games Design lecturer Chris Cox said: “We're incredibly proud of the team, who worked extremely hard for the competition. Taking part in a competition like this gives valuable teamwork experience and enhances design skills in a very practical way.

“Winning the competition not only shows their very high level of skills but also gives them some exposure to the industry judges and trade body. We're very proud of them for having the initiative to take part and for creating a great piece of work.”
