Precautionary building closures on campus

The University has taken the difficult decision to close some buildings on campus as a precaution in response to safety concerns around the use of RAAC (Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete) in buildings nationally.

In a small number of our buildings RAAC is present in the roofs. None of the buildings include residential accommodation and all have been managed and monitored for many years in line with previous guidance on this issue.

However, in light of updated guidance from the Department of Education and in common with universities across the country we have acted swiftly and closed these buildings with immediate effect while we carry out more detailed surveys.

We are pleased to say that we have recently been able to re-open some buildings which were originally shut as a precautionary measure. Some buildings do remain closed and we are continuing to work on contingency plans for those areas that are affected.

We’re very sorry for any disruption this will cause while we identify alternative spaces, but we want to ensure that our buildings remain safe for everyone in our community.
