Wise Choices Careers Day 2024

The Social Work Division were delighted to host a ‘Wise Choices’ event for our final year students this week who are in the final months of study and are starting to think about career progression.

Students were inspired and motivated by Brunel Alumni Daniel and Shanique who shared words of encouragement and support by sharing their experience of the assessed and supported year in employment (ASYE), how to prepare and what to expected from the programme.  Daniel and Shanique discussed what it felt like to be qualified as a social worker sharing wise words since graduating.  It was wonderful to see their success and positive attitudes.  They clearly are such strong role models for our students. We wish them the best in their ongoing careers!

Christel Thames from Brunel Careers Service shared tips, frameworks and tricks for completing applications to prospective employers and how best to prepare for interviews in different social care sectors, she offered some great advice about CV’s and presentation at interview and helped students to practise answering interview questions.

A member of BASW England delivered an informative presentation about their role and how they represent the social work profession and offer support services for students and social workers. For example, advocacy, legal advice, special interests’ groups, social work union support, research and training opportunities.

Heathrow Travel Care provided details of their service demonstrating that a social worker is not limited to just working within Local Authorities settings.  They discussed their main areas of work in responding to day to day crisis social work and how they provide an emergency response at Heathrow Airport to people in need, offering advice to foreign, commonwealth and development office.

The Principal Social Worker from Hillingdon discussed with the students the transition process from Social Work Student to the ASYE. She included the application and interview process which was really helpful and provoked lots of thinking to help students prepare for their qualifying first year of practice.

The Social Work Division are very proud of all our students and what they have achieved to date and would like to wish our final year students the very best as they prepare for graduation and to make their transition to practice.
