EPSRC summer internships

EPSRC announces £40,000 funding for 2026 undergraduate research internships.

Brunel University of London has been awarded £40,000 by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to support vacation research internships for undergraduate students in Summer 2026.

The funding forms part of EPSRC’s wider commitment to strengthening the pipeline into doctoral study for home‑fee students in engineering and physical sciences disciplines.

The scheme aims to provide high‑quality research experience for undergraduates studying subjects aligned to EPSRC’s remit. Eligible students must be:

  • Eligible for home fee status at the end of their degree
  • Studying an EPSRC‑related undergraduate programme
  • Between their second and third, or third and fourth year of study during the internship
  • Undertaking the internship before their final year and outside normal degree requirements

EPSRC requires that opportunities are open to all eligible students, without restrictions based on protected characteristics or socioeconomic background. While internships may be targeted at specific disciplines to align with active research groups, recruitment should remain inclusive.

Vacation internships are an existing optional flexibility within EPSRC doctoral landscape awards, and institutions don't currently need to use this flexibility to access the new funding.
