21st Century Fictions of Global Inequality

This module aims to provide students with an understanding of how global inequality is portrayed in a range of twenty first century fictional forms by focusing on peripheral figures such as cleaners, care-workers, construction labourers, hospitality staff, sex workers, and migrants of all kinds.

3D Design

This module aims to enable students to understand both technically and artistically 3D computer graphics. Students will develop a creative approach to understanding CGI production and pipelines and understanding in 3D modelling, texturing, lighting and rendering.

Accounting Information Systems

This module explains the role of modern information technology in financial and management accounting and the impact of computerised accounting systems on large and small businesses. You will study how the appropriate use of accounting software can manage the typical accounting processes of business organisations. Students will learn how to: write a report explaining current issues in accounting information technology for business users, use accounting software to record, classify, communicate and analyse financial information.

Acting 2: Beyond Naturalism

This module builds on the performing skills introduced in Acting 1 and Ensemble, seeking to develop skills in diversity and flexibility of approach to text. We will focus on texts that reject naturalism and therefore challenge our ability to embody. Acting 2: Beyond Naturalism

Advanced Applied Quantitative Methods

This module will introduce methods suited to analysing complex political data as well as encouraging students to engage with and communicate the use of existing statistical data in the study of political science and in practical application in the political world.

Advanced Acting 3

Advanced Acting is a performance-focused module that provides students with an opportunity to consolidate existing skills and knowledge in acting for the stage through intensive workshop and rehearsal teaching.  This process will culminate in a public sharing of work. The theatrical work will concentrate on realism and naturalism, working with a range of techniques.

Advanced Biomechanics of Sport, Exercise and Physical Activity

Students will gain extensive hands-on experience in using the four main types of biomechanical analysis techniques (video motion analysis, force platform, electromyography, and isokinetic dynamometry). Students will develop skills in data analysis and interpretation, and graphical presentation of data through experiments carried out in the laboratory.

Advanced Design Innovation Project

Advanced Analogue Electronics and Photonics

This module aims to enable students to focus on photonic systems and electronic systems for sensors in general the use of real-world examples and hence to acquire knowledge and understanding of the characteristics of sensors and associated systems for, and the skills to evaluate, design and implement them.

Advanced Embedded Systems Design

The aims of this module are to: 1. provide a detailed knowledge of computing for embedded and control computer systems; 2. illustrate and develop an understanding of the various engineering, scientific and economic trade-offs necessary in the design of embedded systems; 3. understand the principles and the role of embedded systems in real world applications; 4. provide familiarity and experience with a range of architectural and programming techniques for embedded engineering systems and their evaluation; 5. understand the process of implementing algorithms on embedded systems.

Advanced Flood and Coastal Engineering Design

* To deepen students’ knowledge and understanding of criteria used to design flood and coastal defence structures. * To enhance students’ ability to apply design principles to solve complex flood and coastal engineering problems. * Deepen student understanding of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular: SDG6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 13 (Climate Action)

Advanced Musical Theatre 3

This practically focused module gives students with an existing skill base in Musical Theatre performance to build on the skills and knowledge developed in Musical Theatre. Small group teaching enables students to develop an understanding of voice and body as instrument, train and develop skills in rehearsal and performance, integrate singing, dancing, and acting in the effective delivery of an extended musical theatre performance or performance excerpts, and engage in critical self-reflection on their own practice.

Advanced Physical Theatre 3

This module will provide you with an intensive training regime in physical theatre practice, with emphasis on advanced physical skills and help you develop a critical and creative awareness of the importance of working professionally as an ensemble. You will devise a physical theatre performance as an ensemble for public performance.

Advanced Process Engineering

This module aims to deliver advanced knowledge and skills in process engineering design, advanced particulate process technologies and advanced reactor design. It will enable students to properly select various separation processes in diverse industrial applications and designs.

Advanced Vehicular Systems Technology

The aim of this module is to: 1. provide students with up-to-date knowledge in advanced vehicular technology; 2. develop knowledge and understanding of vehicular technologies with which enables inter- and intra- vehicle communications, and battery management.; 3. for students to be aware of relevant technical standards related to electric vehicle systems development.

Africa and the World

Alternative Film and Video Production

This module invites students to study the texts and contexts of a range of alternative film and video practices. We will examine connections between the economic, formal aesthetic and social-political aspects of these practices, and also examine the location of these practices in relation to the dominant models of production, distribution and exhibition. The module will include a variety of case studies looking at the work of a range of filmmakers including Agnes Varda, Christian Marclay, Derek Jarman and Maya Deren. The module also invites students to develop their own creative practice by producing a short video in a collaborative group that examines and explores one or more of these practices.

American Independent Cinema

The independent sector has produced some of the most exciting and distinctive films to appear in the US in recent decades. But what exactly do we mean by ‘independent’, and what is the relationship between the indie scene and the commercial mainstream? This module looks closely at the industrial, formal and social-cultural-political dimensions of American independent cinema, from the work that verges on the avant-garde to the margins of Hollywood.

Ancient Greek Political Thought

The aim of this module is to explore two key texts in ancient Greek political thought: Plato’s Republic and Aristotle’s Politics. Students will gain an understanding of some of the main ideas, themes, images and tropes in the Western tradition of political theory and to contextualise them within two of the first key texts in that tradition. As well as developing writing and analytical skills within political thought, students will develop the skill of thinking politically.

Animal Behaviour

This module aims to examine how evolutionary theory, and an adaptationist perspective, can be used to help understand the behaviour of animals, to review theoretical perspectives and research findings in behavioural ecology, and to demonstrate how advances in behavioural ecology have depended on a combination of theoretical developments, controlled experiments and field studies.

Anthropology and Contemporary Debates

This module applies anthropology to current moral and political debates, demonstrating how anthropological analysis can reveal new and distinctive perspectives. 

Anti-Racism and Performance

This module will explore anti-racism both in and as performance, framing the histories of such practices as fundamental ways to study its present manifestations. Building on students’ understanding of Critical Race Theory from Perspectives 2and examining the relationships between race, racism and colonialism, this module will critically address structural racism, colonial legacies and White Supremacy, and explore how performance practices might operate as an act of social repair, protest and activism.

Apocalypse! Crisis and Society

Discover the narratives and discourses of global issues like risk, uncertainty, globalisation, the environment, disease and capitalism, as you consider the public notions of crisis.

Applied Corporate Branding

This module focuses on application of corporate branding theories to practice. In order to provide students with skills for critical evaluation of current cases and strategies of contemporary corporate brands.

Applied Media Aesthetics

This module aims to develop students’ understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of digital media and apply digital media aesthetics to a digital artefact. It will provide students practical experience in designing and producing short or small digital media projects.

Applied Sensors Instrumentation and Control

This module aims to enable students to focus on particular aspects of sensors, instrumentation and control through the use of real-world examples and hence to acquire knowledge and understanding of the characteristics of sensors and associated systems for monitoring and control, and the skills to evaluate, design and implement them.

Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology

Arab-Israeli Conflict

Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the origins of the Arab-Israeli conflict through the perspectives of the Arab, Palestinian, and Israeli national stories. Students will analyse those conflicting perspectives, and assess the polarised historiography surrounding the conflict with primary and secondary sources.

Artificial Intelligence System Techniques

The aim of the module is: To understand the full range of state-of-the-art artificial intelligence systems techniques; To raise critical awareness of the issues affecting the performance of artificial intelligence systems; To develop the skills required to develop artificial intelligence applications; To gain hands-on experiences through learning, applying and implementing artificial intelligence systems to a given simulated system. Auditing and Assurance

Many of the previous modules, such as Management Accounting or Financial Accounting, focus on learning the rules, techniques needed to prepare and analyse financial information. Studying Auditing & Assurance is much more conceptual in nature, as you learn to evaluate the systems and processes that produce that information. By studying this module, you will understand how auditors assess risks associated with financial statements, gather evidence and report their findings. You will also learn about Fraud and Forensics Accounting and other interesting areas of the profession of Auditing. Successful completion of this module gives you exemptions from a number related papers of the professional bodies exams such as ACCA, AIA and ICAEW. You will learn: to apply the fundamental principles of ethics to professional behaviour, the auditors role in the Corporate Governance of business, how to evaluate information systems and assess the risk of error or fraud, how to gather sufficient, appropriate evidence to offer assurance on company statements.

Australia and The Modern World

The module focuses on Australia’s connections with the wider world from the European maritime voyages to the Pacific in the eighteenth century up to contemporary times. Major themes dealing with varied aspects of Australia’s role in the modern world have been selected for study.

Banking Law

This module will help you to understand legal issues which are associated with banking and credit markets. The law and regulations of banking include the laws setting the conditions for establishing banks, the legal framework for transactions between banks and their customers and the regulatory laws which control the banking activities and the credit market. Banking is essentially concerned with the borrowing and lending of money and this module investigates the legal environments within which the above activities take place.

Big Data Analytics

The main aim of this module is to familiarise students with the key concepts in Big Data Analytics, enabling the students to identify appropriate advanced statistical methodologies to gain insights in process plant operations. Students will be exposed to the practical use of advanced statistical packages (e.g. R) to consolidate their understanding.

Biochemical Engineering

The main aim of this module is to provide the students with knowledge and understanding of the grand challenges and key principles in energy, water and food sustainability. The students will be introduced to energy and economic policies as well as knowledge of technology aspects and skills needed to analyse energy systems. They will learn to use analytical methods to critically assess and compare energy systems with respect to sustainability issues.

Biological Psychology

This module builds on foundations obtained in previous courses in the degree and further develop students' knowledge and critical understanding of biological psychology.

Biomechanics of Human Movement

This module aims to allow students to gain proficiency in calculating and explaining common biomechanical measures that are used to assess human movement. Students will be introduced to biomechanical concepts and gain hands-on experience with measurement equipment and analysis techniques related to the assessment of human movement.

A module that explores the key issues and debates on bodies and society, especially those centred on the relationship between identity and representation of the body in society.

Race, Britain and Empire

The British Maritime World, 1660-1815

The module focuses on the British Maritime World in a period that witnessed significant advances in oceanic exploration, trade and shipping and increased naval protection and supremacy. Students will cover both a broad overview of selected important topics and closer focus on varied types of primary source material.

Business Ethics, Environmental Sustainability and Governance

The module aims to provide students with the opportunity to gain critical understanding of theories and contemporary approaches to business ethics, corporate social responsibility and governance in the age of globalisation, and the challenges of sustainable development and business responses to it.

This module builds on the foundations of entrepreneurship to address strategic, operational, and financial issues that are particularly important for the continued growth and sustainability of new business ventures. It will provide you with an in-depth understanding of theoretical approaches to devising growth strategies of young firms in uncertain market conditions.

Business Intelligence

Exploring the most significant technologies associated with business intelligence, big data and data analytics, with a particular emphasis on applications in the corporate sector. Developing knowledge and professional competency in the analysis, interpretation and management of corporate knowledge resources, and gaining proficiency in relevant tools.

Business Planning

Studying the development of the business plan. Examines different business models, their underlying strategies, and the decision-making process through a variety of case studies.

Changing Audiences

This module will explore issues, concepts, theories and debates concerning changing media audiences. Students will gain knowledge and critical understanding of key theories and methods in relation to how media is being engaged by audiences.

Chemical Engineer’s Toolbox

The primary aim of this module is to prepare and arm our graduates with interpersonal skill sets, practical hands-on experience, and tools essential for a modern chemical engineer to approach, develop and solve day to day challenges attractive to employers. Topics include unit operations, process control, computer-aided simulation, and all aspects of process safety.

Chemical Engineering Design Project

The aim of the design project is to allow students to take full responsibility for a major “individual” design exercise in Chemical or Biochemical Engineering which allows them to be innovative and creative while balancing technical risk versus profit with full economic evaluation. The complexity arising from the interaction and integration of the different parts of the process or system will be addressed. The major project will be undertaken by teams of students so contributing to the development of the students’ transferable skills including communication and team working.

Chemical Engineering Research Project

The research project will allow students to demonstrate their knowledge, skills and understanding acquired during the chemical engineering programme within the broad boundaries defined by the research project brief. The project will involve a rigorous analysis of the peer reviewed literature and state-of-the-art/best practice relevant for the project. The students will carry out independent experimentation, analysis, computation according to the agreed project plan.

Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics

The aim of this module is to introduce the theory and applications of chemical-engineering thermodynamics including the fundamentals of phase equilibria, solution thermodynamics and chemical-reaction equilibria, various types of power generation systems and main thermodynamic cycles. The students will learn to interpret and apply theories in analysing equilibrium thermodynamic systems.

Chemical Reaction Engineering

The aim of this module is to introduce chemical and biochemical reaction engineering and basic (bio)reactor system design. It includes studying the principles of reaction kinetics and their optimisation, in order to define the best reactor design for homogeneous and heterogeneous processes. The application of fundamental theory will be demonstrated using traditional and modern industrial examples.

Children and the Law

In this module you will study the law relating to children and young people who need protection or support as well as further family-focused issues not dealt with in LX3058 – Family Law. You will cover inter alia, public law relating to child abuse, the duties of local authorities to children, the rights of children, decision making relating to medical treatment, as well as non‐biological parenthood in the context of assisted reproduction, adoption and special guardianship. You will also look at the law in relation to children and education.

Civil Engineering Toolbox & Surveying

To enable students to develop technical skills linked to civil engineering design and construction. * To introduce students to the principles and methods of collecting, processing and ethical use of spatial data (including surveying for gathering engineering information and transferring a design to a construction site) * To develop students’ skills in engineering drawing, including sketching techniques to create freehand sketches, along with application of Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Building Information Modelling (BIM) tools in creating typical drawings and parametric models of engineering designs. * To enable students to develop practical skills through conducting surveying activities such as setting out, use of levels and theodolites and calculation procedures and applying GIS tools for modelling and analysis of geospatial data in design, construction, and maintenance of civil engineering infrastructure.

This module aims to enable students to attain a comprehensive understanding of key concepts and theories in the politics and political economy of climate change. It will provide students with resources to assist them in making informed judgments on a range of questions and debates.

Clinical Psychology

Cognitive Psychology

This module aims to introduce students to: the different modes of human cognition (perceiving, imagining, reasoning, remembering, and language), to the main techniques used to study cognition, to the main empirical results in cognitive psychology, and to the main theories of cognition including historically important theories.

Colonialism and Decolonization

You will learn the main themes and events that have characterised African history from about 1800 to the present, with a focus on the history of colonialism and decolonization in sub-Saharan Africa. You will also gain an understanding of the different ways in which Africans have shaped the history of the continent since 1800.

Comedy, the Media & Society

This module provides a serious critical consideration of the role of comedy in contemporary media and society. This role is explored in relation to comedy’s institutional, historical, social and textual conventions. The module also explores comedy as it exists in a broad range of texts and examines the role of comedy in the construction and transmission of social difference and issues of identity.

Communication Networks Security

This module enable graduate to acquire an important aspect of future networks concentrating on cryptography and secure communication networks.

Company Law

This module explores the nature of the company, including the concepts of separate legal personality and limited liability. You will analyse the way companies operate and run and will focus on the features of both large companies whose shares are traded on the stock market as well as the features of family businesses and partnerships. You will also study internal relations between the participants in the company (shareholders and directors) and the relations between the company and external stakeholders who get affected by its activities.

Company Law and Regulation

This module aims to explore the nature and scope of the general legal system in the UK and its major laws related to business and companies, to provide a critical understanding of the legal framework within which companies operate, to investigate legal obligations and the effects of the law on key factors in relation to company formation, day-to-day administration and failure, and to develop knowledge and analytical skills on evaluation of issues related to obligation of companies and their directors.

Comparative Electoral Systems

This module aims to provide students with an understanding of political institutions and their impact through institutional analysis and modern institutional theory and explores single case studies, cross-case and cross-temporal comparisons. The module is divided in three parts; part one covers the theoretical approaches in new institutionalism, part two covers specific institutions and part three covers the influence of institutions on policy.

Competition Law

In this module you will gain a thorough understanding of the main principles of competition law which falls within the larger subject of commercial law. As part of the study, EU competition law is used as a framework to understand the law, economics and policy of competition law. You will also cover UK competition law and important business phenomena such as anticompetitive agreements, abuse of market dominance and mergers between undertakings.

Complex Variable Methods and Applications

This module aims to develop the students' ability to manipulate expressions involving complex quantities and to develop their understanding of analytic functions with representations involving contour integrals and series, and to enable students to evaluate certain definite integrals using contour integration.

Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing Techniques

This module aims to identify technical challenges in design modelling, communications and design integration in the context of global product design and development, to critically review IT technologies, computer aided design, evaluation and integration techniques in a range of integrated product design activities, to develop in depth knowledge in creative and virtual design theories, methods and evaluation tools, and to familiarise students with a range of different types of IT, CAD, CAE and UX/UI software enabling them to make informed evaluations of current and future systems.

Computer Intensive Statistical Methods

This module aims to introduce the students to a range of computational intensive statistical methods, to further develop their skills in correct interpretation and clear reporting of results, and to enable the students to create algorithms for regression models (parametric regression and nonparametric regression) to cope with massive data.

Conceptual and Historical Issues

This module aims to provide an historical overview of the study of psychology as a science, and to provide conceptual integration across multiple perspectives in psychology.

Conflict and Diplomacy in the Modern Era

The aim of this module is to understand the outbreak, development and conclusion of armed conflict since 1815. This module focuses on the space between peace and conflict, emphasising themes such as great power competition, diplomacy, the peace movement, international law, empire, decolonisation, and more. In the process of developing an awareness of such issues, students will focus on historical documents that shed light on the practices and outcomes of diplomacy.

Conflict in the Modern World

The module aims to provide an overview of how conflicts are studied - practically show how conflicts are measured, illustrate how conflicts occur, who are involved and how they stop.

Consumer Behaviour

This module aims to provide students with a critical understanding of ‘consumer behaviour’ as investigative discipline informing individual and marketing decisions. Attention will be paid to the external, situational and internal factors which include psychological, social, cultural and economic factors that influence consumer behaviour in personal buying situations and the complexity of the Decision-Making Unit and process.

Consumer Law

If contract law is one of the most fundamental areas of law, consumer law is its younger brother. Consumer law addressing power imbalance between parties and has a strong cross‐border and transnational element. This module offers a unique practical outlook that will teach you not only the black letter law, but also how to think of consumer problems and resolve them in practice. Discussions in class will focus on contemporary developments as well as established rules and case law.

Contemporary British and Irish Fiction

This module aims to develop your awareness of contemporary British and Irish fiction since 1970. In particular, the module charts the emergence of a contemporary mode of fiction in Britain distinct from that of the preceding post-war period. You will develop knowledge of the variety and complexity of contemporary writing and its relation to social and cultural context.

Contemporary Society and Media

The aim of this module is to introduce students to a range of concepts and issues that underpin the ways in which every day social life is shaped. Students will examine the production of social, political and economic relations, drawing upon contemporary examples in order to address important questions that society faces.

Corporate and Competitive Strategy

Corporate Investment

This module represents a core component of corporate finance and aims to give students a range of techniques to investigate firms’ investment decisions. The first approach is from the perspective of the capital budgeting decision, and the second is from the perspective of the theory of investment management in terms of the incorporation of risk and uncertainty into asset pricing.

Corporate Reporting

Corporate reporting plays a key role in an organisation’s communication with its various stakeholders. Following on from MG2112 (Principles and Practices of Financial Accounting) which introduces you to published financial statements and their theoretical underpinning, the aim of this module is to develop students’ knowledge and skills in preparing and analysing the financial statements of more complex organisations, according to International Accounting Standards. Additionally the module encourages you to reflect on the role of a company as a responsible corporate citizen and the social responsibility of organisations to report non-financial aspects of their performance. Successful completion of this module also gives you exemptions from a number related papers of the professional bodies’ exams, such as ACCA, AIA and ICAEW. You will learn: how to critically evaluate current issues in the development of corporate reporting for corporate social and environment sustainability, to prepare complex financial statements for groups of companies using International accounting standards, how to analyse and interpret real financial statements for different users.

Creative Project Development

Students will develop awareness of media production workflows and will be offered the opportunity to develop their creative skills. Students will also be introduced to creative project development and management. The module will also introduce students to key vocabulary and concepts associated with creative project development and management.

Creativity for Digital Media Design

This module aims to instil the student with a robust set of creative design skills, through creative thought, techniques, practices and disciplines and with the ability to communicate and present their design ideas to creative practitioners and non-specialised clients.

Creativity, Entrepreneurship and Innovation

This module aims to define creativity within the context of innovative and entrepreneurial firms. It seeks to analyse creativity at individual, group, organisational, urban and national levels, delineating its vital role in fostering innovation and entrepreneurship.

Creativity, Innovation and Leadership

This module aims to introduce the key concepts surrounding creativity, innovation and leadership and how they relate to the entrepreneurial context. Specifically, this module aims to discuss the creativity and innovation process in the context of new ventures, organisations, and networks; evaluate the creativity and innovation process and the role of leadership and technology in nurturing creativity and innovation at individual, team, organisational and systems levels.

Criminal Law

Introducing students to English Criminal Law. To engage students in a critical evaluation of the definition and scope of serious criminal offences as well as a critical discussion of the underlying philosophies.

Critical Issues in Sport

The aim of this module is to provide students with an opportunity to critically evaluate social problems/issues associated with sports in contemporary society and apply social theories/research to critically analysing these issues. A particular focus is given to the role of the media in (re)producing social phenomena.

Critical Pedagogy and Learning in Physical Education and Sport

The aim of this module is to understand how learners' embodied experience can be supported through the construction of effective learning environments and the implementation of critical pedagogy in physical education and sport. The module explores the challenges, choices and constraints faced by teachers, coaches and learners in present and future learning environments. This is studied in relation to physical literacy, health and wellbeing, digital technology and physical culture in the context of learners embodied difference.

Critical Perspectives in Management

The module seeks to introduce students to a critical approach to the study of management and organisations. This will be achieved through an exploration of bureaucratic/post-bureaucratic organisations, new forms of work organisations, new forms of managerial control, resistance and power, new forms of employment, gender and work organisations.

Cross-Cultural Psychology

This module aims to examine the ways that culture is defined and measured by cross-cultural psychologists, to explore the dominant theoretical paradigms in the field and contextualize cross-cultural psychology within other disciplines: sociology, anthropology, cultural psychology, evolutionary psychology, and to examine cultural variation in psychological phenomena such as cognition, emotion, motivation, the self-concept, relationships, and prosocial and antisocial behaviour.

The module aims to increase awareness of the importance of customer care and the lifetime value of the customer.

Delivery Public Policy

Documentary: Image and Violence

This module will focus on understanding cinematic representations of violence in documentary films. It will invite students to develop a critical awareness of different types of violence in relation to warfare, develop insights into visual themes, narrative structures and techniques used in moving images’ engagement with violence and to examine the strategies used by filmmakers to visualise the traumatic effects of violence. Students will develop an understanding of cinematic and photographic representations of violence through case studies of the work of film makers such as Joshua Oppenheimer, Barbet Schroeder, and Ari Folman and the writings and texts of Susan Sontag and Judith Butler amongst others. The module will also look beyond the battlefield to initiatives in citizen filmmaking and to ask what the stories we tell about images of violence tell us about ourselves.
