Second Lieutenant Carl Lowther attended Borough Road College from 1898-1900. Before coming to the college he was an enthusiastic member of his local ‘Young Peoples' Society of Christian Endeavour’. At the college he did particularly well in the drawing, especially geometry and blackboard. He is listed as being destined to teach at a boarding school in Manchester after leaving Borough Road College. He joined the Manchester Regiment in September 1914 as a private and rose to Company Quarter Master Sergeant before being commissioned. His fellow officers had an uncommonly deep appreciation for him. He was 40 when he was killed by shellfire after leading men in attack for 100 yards in the dark on the Steenbeck. He has no known grave as his body was never found or identified.
