Biography

Leading telegraphist Charles Church is described as being 5’11” with a 33” chest, auburn hair, and grey eyes. He attended Borough Road College for two years, graduating with an Intermediate Sciences qualification. In September 1914 he enlisted in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. From 18 October 1914 he served at Firs Wireless Station (Ireland), then at Shore W/S Inch Keith (Scotland) from 8 February 1916. In August 1917 he transferred to HMS Victory 1 in Portsmouth. His fiancée died of blood poisoning. Church died of influenza and pneumonia on 14 September 1918 and was buried near where his parents lived.
