Development of resilient hospitals through enhanced built environment design and research

Approximately one-fifth of the confirmed COVID-19 cases and the majority of the infected frontline healthcare workers were associated with healthcare-acquired infections during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. There have been growing concerns about the present hospital design procedures even before the pandemic as it overemphasises the previously acquired data but a lack of ability to address knowledge generated outside healthcare.

The primary purpose of this PhD project is to explore the vision of a resilient hospital through enhanced built environment design and research. The other research aims include:

• Designing, building and testing hospital digital twins with a focus on algorithms and modularity (standard and bespoke elements). Different modes of transmission will be considered through agent-based modelling (ABM).

• Assessing the capacity of NHS hospitals to implement the adjustments, structural adaption, and spatial re-organisation through case study investigations.

You will join the internationally recognised researchers in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

  • Computer simulation including building information modelling;
  • Case study investigations (local and overseas hospitals).

Kangkang Tang - Dr Kangkang Tang is a chartered civil and structural engineer (CEng MICE IStructE) and a senior lecturer leading the undergraduate civil engineering modules at Brunel University London. He is the course director of BEng Civil Engineering and BEng Civil Engineering with sustainablity.
