Department of Mathematics at Brunel University London are pleased to offer the Mathematics MSc scholarship. The awards are for fully self-funded international students only and are based upon academic profile and payment of the course deposit. We will award the scholarship to applicants who most closely meet or exceed the criteria for the award.

Due to the limited number of awards, they will be allocated on a first come, first served basis until all awards have been allocated. To be considered for the scholarship applicants need to hold an offer of a place to study on the MSc Financial Mathematics or MSc Statistics with Data Analytics postgraduate programmes starting in September 2024. Award winners will be expected to pay the course deposit of £5,000 within 4 weeks of being awarded.

Award details

Value: £3,000 tuition fee waiver applied to the first year of study only.

How many: 10 scholarships in total (5 each for MSc Financial Mathematics and MSc Statistics with Data Analytics).

Application process: Applicants should apply for the scholarship by completing the application form by midnight UK time on 31st July 2024. Applicants must submit a 300-word statement which describes:

  1. How your academic study and other activities merit receipt of the scholarship.
  2. How an MSc degree in the Department of Mathematics at Brunel University London will assist you in meeting your career aspirations.
  3. How you can act as a good ambassador for the Department, both while on the course and later as an alumnus.

Applicants must also submit copies of their highest qualification transcripts with the scholarship application. Late applications and incomplete applications will not be considered.

Scholarship Awards will be confirmed by 13th August 2024, subject to meeting all conditions stated on the offer letter.

Brunel will assess each application for suitability against these terms and conditions.

Award holders may be required to represent Brunel as ambassadors throughout their time at the University and to participate occasionally in various activities to help promote the University. This might include hosting tours of the campus and its facilities, providing administrative support at Open Days, participating in social media and other marketing activity as required. Scholarship winners will be contacted by the International Recruitment or Marketing team as and when participation is required.

Data pertaining to bursary/scholarship holders such as: progression rates, degree attainment, degree completion, and graduate outcomes may also be analysed in order to understand the effectiveness of bursaries and scholarships. This data may also be linked to other data already held by the University for the purpose of better understanding the impact of bursaries and scholarships on under-represented groups. Eligibility

2.1 Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Must be classed as an Overseas fee paying student based on the UK government regulations and be self-funded (not sponsored). Applicants who are unsure of their fee status should note Brunel uses the information they have provided in their application form to assess fee status against regulations set by the UK government. For information on these regulations please visit the independent organisation UKCISA’s website.
  • Must have an offer to study on the full time MSc Financial Mathematics or MSc Statistics with Data Analytics programme starting in September 2024.
  • All applicants must meet all conditions of their offer by the time they are due to register at Brunel. Candidates must pay their £5,000 tuition fee deposit within one month to secure their award.

2.2 Those not eligible for these Scholarships

  • Applicants NOT classed as Overseas for fees purposes, based on the UK government regulations or those with an unresolved fee status.
  • Applicants who are not fully self-funded and are being sponsored by a Government or external body.
  • The award is not available to Undergraduate or Postgraduate Research applicants (i.e. PhD, MPhil).
  • Applicants selected for College Specific Scholarships for International students will not be considered for this award.
  • Applicants holding an offer of an International Excellence Scholarship will not be considered for this award.
  • Applicants who will NOT commence their course in September 2024, this includes deferred entry month and year.
  • Applicants entering a course with Brunel Pathway College (BPC) or who are progressing to a Brunel course from an BPC course.
  • Applicants holding an offer to study by Distance Learning.
  • Applicants holding offers to study on a part-time programme.

Allocation

3.1 Applicants who meet the eligibility criteria at the time of allocation will be considered for a scholarship using the information provided at the time of their course application only and cannot be considered should their circumstances change during the course of their studies. Awards cannot be backdated.

3.2 Applicants applying for the scholarship must pass a rigorous selection and a transparent evaluation process which includes a written statement and submission of course transcripts. All applicants will be assessed by the Department of Mathematics Scholarship Committee.

3.3 Scholarships will be awarded provisionally in August and confirmed in September

3.4 The Department of Mathematics Scholarship Committee will be responsible for initiating and managing the communication with the applicants, alongside the marketing team. They will be screening and assessing the applications, and submit their recommendation to the committee. The committee will be responsible for producing a final list for eligible awardees.

3.5 The decision of the Department of Mathematics Scholarship Committee is final. The University will not accept any appeals in respect of the decisions made by the Department of Mathematics Scholarship Committee.

3.6 Award winners will be expected to pay the course deposit of £5,000 within 4 weeks of being awarded.

3.7 Applicants who do not pay the course deposit of £5,000 within 4 weeks of being awarded will forfeit the award and the scholarship will be removed.

3.8 The University will not accept any appeals in respect of awards that have been withdrawn.

3.9  The award can be combined with the following Brunel discounts:

  • The 2% prompt payment discount
  • The Brunel Graduate discount
  • The Brunel Family discount

The award cannot be combined with any other University scholarship, bursary, discount or award, this includes the Vice Chancellor Excellence scholarship and International Bursary.

3.10 The order of discounts will be applied as follows:

  1. Scholarship/bursary fee waiver applied to the full annual tuition fee;
  2. 10% Brunel Family Discount applied to the net tuition fee.
  3. 15% Graduate discount applied to the net tuition fee.
  4. 2% Early payment discount applied to the net tuition fee.

3.11 If an applicant is eligible for more than one scholarship or discount, they will be awarded the one which is most financially beneficial across the full course duration. 

3.12 Awards are made for the September 2024 entry of the academic year 2024/25 only and cannot be deferred to other months or years of entry. Course applicants who intend to defer their studies from 2024/25 academic year to 2025/26 will lose any award they have been made.

Conditions of payment

4.1 Awardees will be responsible for paying the remainder of their tuition fees after the award contribution is deducted from the total fees for each academic year.

4.2 The tuition fee will be reduced by £3,000 for one year only for Postgraduate applicants.

4.3 Conditions of fee waiver: The fee waiver will only be made providing the student is fully enrolled at the University on an undergraduate or postgraduate programme.

4.4 The award does not replace the deposit of £5,000. All awardees will need to pay the £5,000 deposit for their course in order to formally receive the award, an unconditional offer and a Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies (CAS). The amount of the award will be deducted from the remaining fees.

4.5 The fee waiver will only be applied providing the student is fully enrolled at the University on a full time undergraduate or postgraduate programme of study which includes having had their qualifications and other documentation verified and checked, and then completing the University enrolment procedures. This includes holding the correct visa to study.

4.6 Awardees who have already paid the full course fees can visit the Student Centre to request a refund of any overpayment; once they have met all conditions of their offer and enrolled onto their main course in person.

Withdrawal of a scholarship

5.1 Misleading information: The University reserves the right to withdraw the award from anyone who is found to have misled the University about any aspect of their eligibility and the University may seek repayment of discount offered on fees.

5.2 Mode of Attendance Change: If a student changes to different mode of study, their eligibility for the award will be reviewed. The award will be withdrawn if the change is from full time to part time or distance learning and the University may seek repayment of the discount offered on fees.

5.3 Changing course: If a student transfers to a course outside the MSc Financial Mathematics or MSc Statistics with Data Analytics the award will be withdrawn and the University may seek repayment of discount offered on fees.

5.4 Suspension of Study: Should a student be suspended for any reason, award will be withdrawn and consideration of reinstatement will be dependent on the disciplinary outcome.

5.5 Repeat/Extended Study: Periods of temporary withdrawal that result in repeat or extended periods of study are not supported by additional payments. Award entitlement is for the maximum duration of each award and entitlement is not extended if overall course duration alters.

5.6 Withdrawal from Study: A student who withdraws from their programme prior to completion and who is in receipt of an award will not normally be requested to repay award payments made up to the point of withdrawal.

5.7 Fee Waiver Amendments: Fee waivers are applied at the start of the academic year as part/all of an award entitlement and will not normally be amended once the fee waiver has been processed. Any tuition fee liability remaining after fee waivers are applied would therefore be calculated in accordance with Student Financial Policy.In the case of withdrawal or abeyance the tuition fee and the fee waiver are calculated in accordance with Student Financial Policy.
