Environmental Sciences skills development

Environmental sciences exposes you to number of challenges across the scientific and geographical spectrum where you’ll get the opportunity to make a real difference to our world.

Our Environmental Sciences degrees are built-in with cutting-edge training to help you develop the essential skills to become a dynamic member of this industry.

Observation skills and critical thinking

On your Environmental Sciences undergraduate degree, you’ll go on a range of local field trips as well as on an international trip to Tenerife, one of the most varied landscapes in the world due to its unique geographical properties. We also have a field trip closer to home in Dorset which you can find out more about by viewing the video below:

These trips will enhance your observational and assessment skills so that you can record changing environmental information. You’ll use your learned theory to critically analyse your gathered data to identify vital insight.

Technical skills

On your Environment Sciences undergraduate degree, you’ll use software such as Geographic Information System (GIS), a system that captures, stores, manipulates and analyses geographical data. This equips you with the technical skills to tackle a range of ecological issues.

Lab skills

On your Environment Sciences degree, you get to use our labs from day one to help you develop your scientific skills. You’ll have access to basic laboratory equipment and work your way up to more specialist equipment in our main Teaching Laboratory which can hold up to 80 people.

You’ll use equipment such as our MARS Microwave to evaluate your gathered samples and you’ll then use our ICP-OES (Inductively Coupled Plasma - Optical Emission Spectrometry) machine to further analyse these samples.

These activities will start to motivate you to develop your own unique research project as part of your dissertation.

Career skills

All our undergraduate and postgraduate Environmental Sciences degrees include optional work placement opportunities.

On your Environmental Sciences undergraduate degrees, you’ll develop your career skills on our Leadership for Sustainability module.
