Dr Mohammed Elsouri
Lecturer in Computer-based Design Methods and Mechanics

Summary

Mohammed Elsouri is a lecturer in Computer Based Design Methods at Brunel. His research interests are in addressing complexity in design for manufacture and assembly domain to improve design effectiveness. His areas of expertise include developing information and knowledge models of manufacturing and assembly processes to improve design thinking in industrial context. He recently completed the design and implementation of a lights out RST environmental testing facility using industrial robotic systems in collaboration with BAE Systems, Electronic Systems Devision (CI, 75K RCIF Fund).

Prior to joining Brunel, he was a lecturer in Engineering Design at University of Greenwich and had contributed to articulation and founding of a new MSc programme in Product Design Engineering and was Faculty Academic Officer for degree apprenticeships. In this role, he taught Computer Aided Design and Manufacture (CAD/CAM), Product and Service Development, Research Methodology, and Design Process. He was shortlisted by Student Led Teaching Awards (STLA) for Most Inspirational Lecturer of the Year for his work in 2021, and for Accessible Education and Outstanding Tutor for his work in 2022.

He obtained his PhD in the Developement of Collaborative Design Systems for Implementing DFMA thinking using Defects, sponsored by BAE Systems and Engineering & Science Research Council UK (EPSRC iCase PhD Scholarship 2015-2018). He has published around 14 articles from his works in this area in a variety of international journals and conferences. He moved on to become Research Manager on a £4m interdisciplinary INTEREGG project titled 'improving the design of flexible and responsive manufacturing systems involving autonomous collaborative robots (corot-project.org) working on development of robotic and autonomous manufacturing systems focusing on SME technology adoption in the French-England Channel region.

Between 2010 and 2015 he worked as a mechanical design engineer for a number of world leading companies in the Biotechnology, Life-Science and Medical Devices industry.

He previously achieved an MSc in Integrated Product Design (2011), and a BSc in Industrial Design (Hons) (2010) from Brunel University. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, Member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) and a PGCE holder since 2019.
