Experts by Experience
Since 2006, the social work programme at Brunel University London has enjoyed the support of Brunel Experts by Experience Committee (BEC) which is involved in all aspects of the programme from helping in the selection process of students through to planning teaching materials, delivering lectures and presentations and assessing students. Members of the committee have rich experience in a wide range of areas, either as users of services or as carers. In recent years the involvement of service users and carers as partners in the delivery of social work education has made into a required activity by the regulating professional body, the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC).
Laura has extensive experience with mental health services and is keen to help students develop their ability to work in partnership with people with mental health problems. Hear Laura's story in the video below.
Collaborating with experts with experience
Following the onset of multiple sclerosis, Patrick developed his knowledge and understanding of the difficulties and challenges, he and others with the condition, are experiencing. He has shared this understanding with students on different platforms. Hear Patrick's story in the video below.
Experts by experience sharing knowledge
Claire Thomas used to be the Chief Executive of Hillingdon Carers until her own partner and mother both required her care. Through the direct experience of caring for them, she gained new knowledge which is often inaccessible to those lacking direct experience of caring for someone. Through her involvement in BEC, Claire attempts to help social work students to bridge this gap. Hear Claire's story in the video below.
